Kano State Police Command has recovered gold jewellery worth N30 million, property of Hajiya Maryam Abacha, widow of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha. The Command also shot dead two armed robbery suspects, during a gun duel.
State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris told reporters in Kano on Wednesday that the items were recovered after a thorough investigation into the case, adding that the arrest of one Lawan Mohammed led to the recovery of the exhibits.
The jewellery were said to have been stolen from the residence of the late Abacha family sometime ago when a five-man robbery armed gang broke into their residence in Nassarawa Quarters in Kano metropolis.
He said five of the armed robbers have been arrested, while one of them was shot during the operation.
Among the recovered items were, 42 pieces of gold ear rings, five pieces of gold rings, five pieces of gold pendants, five set of gold jewels and 26 pieces of golden chairs.
The Police said that the suspects after investigations will soon appear in court for prosecution.
Mr. Idris said that during a stop and search operation, four occupants of the Toyota Corolla car, with registration No NA 947 KJA, instead of obeying Police order, opened fire and in the process, two of the armed robbery suspects were gunned down, while three escaped through the bush path.
According to him, a search on their vehicle led to the recovery of one AK 47 rifle with rounds of live ammunition, two locally made revolver pistols, five cartridges and one AK 47 rifle magazine.
Mr. Idris also lamented the rising incident of rape cases in the state, and said that a 55-year-old man, one Ibrahim Tanko, a habitual rapist was arrested by the police for raping a four-year old minor, whom he lured to a corner; threatening to inject her if she refused his overtures.
The Police Commissioner said that about nine rape suspects were arrested by the Police in different parts of the metropolis last month, adding that the suspects will soon be charged to court for prosecution.
The Commissioner revealed that during a raid of black spots and criminal hide outs in the metropolis, 256 suspects, who specialize in terrorizing inhabitants of the area were apprehended.
Among items recovered include nine various types of cars, three AK 47 rifles; one Lar rifle; Makarov pistol, one FN Herstal Belgium SSS rifle; 50 rounds of assorted live ammunitions, two pistols magazine and 184 parcels and 340 wraps of Indian Hemp.
