The Director-General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. Ikem Odumodu, has advised manufacturing companies to explore the array of resource persons and international experts being assembled for the maiden Nigeria Quality Summit to update their knowledge and skills on current best practices for increased efficiency.
Odumodu, who spoke in Lagos, said SON in realising the need to make Nigerian companies more competitive and prepared to play in the global market, has concluded plans to host the first Nigeria Quality Summit on December 6 with an array of resource persons from the developed world and emerging super economies such as Malaysia.
“The chief executives of Swedish Standards Institute, Standards Malaysia, South Africa Bureau for Standards, Egyptian Standards Board and chairman of International Organisation for Standardisation Committee for Developing Countries (ISO DEVCO), who is also the director-general of Kenya Bureau of Standards, have all accepted to speak on various topics at the summit which has as theme: Less Waste, Better Results – Standards Increase Efficiency,” he disclosed.
According to Odumodu, “The Nigeria Quality Summit initiative has the capacity to greatly enhance the systems, processes and management of Nigerian companies. As a facilitative government agency, improved quality of life and safety of Nigerians is of paramount importance.
So, the need to encourage made in Nigeria products and create an enabling environment for Nigerian brands to grow.
“Participants at the summit will have the opportunity of being exposed to the trade and business secrets of developed countries like Sweden, Malaysia, South Africa and Egypt as they will hear first-hand success stories and case studies from businesses and leading economies on best business practices that will drive efficiency.”
He disclosed that the ongoing zero-tolerance to substandard products campaign and the fight against dumping of sub-standard/unsafe products into the Nigerian market by SON will eventually leave a vacuum for companies to fill.
“However, it is only the Nigerian companies whose systems, processes and management conform to international standards that will enjoy the immense benefits from this opportunity,” he maintained.
The Nigerian Quality Summit is a one-day event being organised by SON for top executives and business leaders from both the private and public sectors to brainstorm on a better Nigeria through standardisation.
It is scheduled to hold on December 6 at the Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos. The Summit, apart from offering networking opportunities, will feature panel discussions by business experts, including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chief Kola Jamodu, Mazi Sam Ohuanbuwa, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, Mr. Segun Agbaje and other stakeholders.
