Minister of Sports, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi
The Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, has directed secretaries of the sporting federations to prepare their handover notes ahead of their redeployment to the commission.
According to the Special Assistant on Media to the minister, Julius Ogunro, the latest move is in line with the minister’s commitment to reform the federations and reposition them for greater efficiency in the New Year.
“At the moment, all sporting federations are deployed from the NSC and this has affected the internal cohesion of the federations. Some of the federations have used the secretaries as excuses for non-performance in the past. As part of the on-going reforms, the federations will now have the power to appoint their own secretaries, thereby granting them greater autonomy,” Ogunro disclosed Sunday.
But before the federations hire the scribes, the NSC is expected to set the guidelines for the appointment of the secretaries.
Similarly, the NSC is also learnt to be developing eligibility guidelines that will guide elections and appointments into the boards of these federations.
Apart from poor funding that has been hampering sports development in the country, the Presidential Sports Retreat, which held in October 2012, also identified management and poor administration as other problems of Nigerian sports.
