The Nigeria Petroleum Development Corporation (NPDC) at the weekend flagged off its awareness campaign on the game of golf, stressing that the move was part of the organisation’s corporate social responsibility to the environment it operates.
The Managing Director of NPDC, Abiye Hendersen Membere, who disclosed this at the tee-off of the NPDC-Bankers Tournament at the Benin Golf Club, also expressed joy with partnering the golf club and the bankers that support its operations.
Over 140 golfers (professionals and amateurs) drawn from Ikeja, Otukpo, Ikoyi, Sapele, Warri and Asaba took part in the tournament.
According to Membere, “It’s a way of bringing the upstream company (NPDC), banks and the golf section together to create awareness for the game.
“We do not only sponsor golf, we support Benin Club in table tennis, swimming and other sporting activities we feel would contribute to the well being of the citizenry.”
He, however, urged the government to build mini golf courses in primary and secondary schools so as to encourage the game among youths.
