Vice President Namadi Sambo has read the riot act to contractors handling power projects under the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) to expedite action so as to deliver the projects before the December 2013 deadline given to them.

The vice president gave the charge Saturday in Abuja during the periodical project management meeting of the NIPP.

According to him, although the level of work done by contractors handling the generation projects of the NIPP is appreciable, as many have been completed, the slow pace of work on some transmission projects across the country is regrettable.

“One of the areas that is now of great challenge is to ensure that we deliver our transmission projects," the vice president said.

He added: “We have also witnessed good developments by some contractors. For those of you that are here today, are definitely (we are) having some weakling, and you see, these contracts have been going on for ages and for every journey,  the journey starts and that journey obviously must have an end.

“2013 is the end year. It is the end year for all NIPP projects. Nigerians must receive the power that we are able to generate and that is why you have been given this assignment," he reminded the contractors.

“I know we have all prepared our  plans to meet this target, but, our analysis has shown a lot of weaknesses in most of you and that is why today we will discuss these programmes and come to final understanding and agreements by all of you in ensuring that by December 2013, we have 100 percent completion of all our transmission projects in the Niger Delta Power Holding Company.”

While appreciating the nation’s power generation capacity, which has reached 4,517.6 megawatts as at the end of last year, Sambo warned that government will not take it lightly with any contractor who failed to meet the target of all the NIPP projects.

A similar meeting was held in June, 2012, with contractors handling the generation projects under the NIPP.
