The sum of N1.8 billion has been appropriated for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for the 2013 season.

The amount was lower than the sum of N1.9 billion voted for the football federation for the current year.

NFF President Aminu Maigari and General Secretary Musa Amodu Wednesday were subjected to a barrage of questions by the House Committee on Sports where they defended the budget performance for 2012 in addition to federation’s projection for next year.

NFF officials said that they were stunned to be handed an envelope of N1.8 billion which was a far cry from their projected appropriation of N4.8 billion for 2013.

Next year’s budget for sporting related activities is N1.7 billion while the capital expenditure is N144million.

The increase in the capital appropriation for next year was to cover the cost of furniture for the new NFF secretariat which is under construction and due for completion in March next year.

The Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in January and will underscore the scope of activities in the Nigerian football calendar next year.

Also the FIFA 2014 World Cup qualifying matches will resume in March with scheduled fixtures against Kenya, Malawi and Namibia. The matches will set the stage for the final knock out matches in October for the continent’s five slots.

Nigerian age grade teams are also projected to participate in continental and FIFA competitions in Algeria, Turkey, Morocco and the United Africa Emirates.

While giving a summary of the activities of the federation this year, Amadu said that Nigeria played 54 matches in all categories and recorded 33 victories, 11 draws and 10 losses.

But members of the committee were not satisfied with some aspects of the performance for the year and have asked the federation to come back with a detailed submission in seven days.

Chairman of the committee, Hon Godfrey Gaiya, said the leadership of the NFF must state the expenditures it incurred on all 54 matches, sponsorship revenue and cost of flight tickets.

The house also wanted to know the sources funding for the new football headquarters as well as where the structure will be sited.

In addition, the committee sought to know other sources of revenue for the federation, ranging from sponsorship, gifts, partnership and endorsement so that it can be well documented.

The federation is also expected to state in details how it planned to use the appropriation for 2013, while it must also state if the vote will cover the cost of prosecuting the international matches for next year or otherwise.

Amadu had said the federation resorted to using sponsorship fee to augment its meagre subvention, after Hon Tijani Yusuf, had accused the NFF of not paying the N774 million generated through other means into the federation account as stated by the Act.

With the year due to end next month, Amadu said that balance of N284m was still expected to be paid to complete the vote for sporting activities for the season.
