Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi will only get an official car and apartment unless corporate sponsors bail out the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) by doling out the cash for them, it has been gathered.
Keshi has no official car to aid his easy movement in town. He has also been making up at the team’s official hotel since he was appointed the national coach in November 2011.
A member of the board of NFF Dr Shehu Adamu authoritatively said at the weekend that the federation had not fulfilled the accommodation and car aspects which were stipulated in the contract because it could not deploy its capital budget for that purpose.
Adamu said that the only option the federation could explore in order to satisfy Keshi was to appeal for prospective sponsors to cushion the effect by providing the cash.
“The only way we can afford a car and accommodation for Keshi is through sponsorship as there is no provision for such under the federation’s capital budget. It will be a welcome development if sponsors can bail us with the cash so that we can address once and for all those obligations,” Adamu said.
Keshi’s predecessor, Samson Siasia was provided with an official car which was later passed on to Kadiri Ikhana when the latter was appointed as the Super Falcons coach.
Ikhana has since been relieved of his appointment in the wake of the Falcons’ fumbling flight at the Africa Women’s Championship in Equatorial Guinea last month.
It is expected that the value of Keshi’s car will be in the range of N15m as the federation is shopping to get a jeep for the former captain of the national team.
It is understood that the proposed arrangement by the federation will offer prospective sponsors an opportunity to brand Keshi’s car as the costs of car and accommodation for national coaches in the past have sorely been at the instance of the ‘Glasshouse’.
NFF will spend about N1.8 billion next year, but outside its approved budget it is projecting to rake in additional over N700 million from its existing sponsors to augment its finance base.
