The national President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Dr. Demola Aladekomo, has said the association would continue to honour achievers that have helped to build the industry.

Aladekomo who spoke at the recent 2012 National Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA 2012) for Information Technology (IT) top achievers, said it was good to honour achievers while they are alive, than when they had gone, so that they could feel their good works and be encouraged to do more.

Dignitaries at the IT event included, Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola; Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communication Commissions (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah, who received NCS Fellowship status; Director, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Mr. Emeka Ezekwesili; Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson who was represented; immediate Past President of the NCS, Professor Charles Uwadia and Provost, College of Fellows, Alhaji Ladi Ogunneye. Others were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator, Anyim Pius Anyim, represented by Permanent secretary (Special Duties) Office of the SGF, Dr. Henry Akpan.

According to Aladekomo, the event, which turned out to be colourful, “is in line with the association’s strategy of celebrating heroes in the sector to stimulate outstanding performances that will drive real, inclusive development and transformation in Nigeria through IT. The hosting of NITMA also encourages healthy competition while spurring innovation and creativity within the IT community nationwide.”

At the award event, Professional Fellowships were conferred on ten new fellows during the fellowship award process coordinated by the Deputy Provost, Dr. Obi Okonkwo, and Provost of the College of Fellows, Alhaji Ladi Ogunneye, and the NCS President. Fellow is the highest grade of the NCS professional cadre, which is conferred in recognition of the significant impact an NCS member has had in the IT field.

The new NCS professional fellows (FNCS) are: Adegoke Rasheed Aderemi; Aderounmu Ganiyu Adesola; Akinlade Titilola Olusola; Arah Umunna Onyekwelu Aniekan; Arogundade Adedayo Peter Sunday; Awodele Oludele; Bello Aderonke Abosede; Juwah Eugene Ikemefuna; Olajide Michael Ajibola and Williams Olufemi Sunday.
Professional fellows are celebrated as role models to inspire young IT professionals, encourage the growth of professionalism in IT and accelerate the advancement of the IT sector through the productive application of IT expertise to provide opportunities and overcome challenges.

In his remarks, Governor Aregbesola commended NCS for its developmental role in IT and for organising what he described as inspiring event. He outlined innovative technology based initiatives of his state, inviting IT stakeholders to partner the state, insisting that his government is focused on making Osun State the IT hub of Nigeria.
He confirmed state’s acceptance to host the next NCS conference in July 2013
