Following the near-fatal clash between personnel of the Lagos State Police Command and the Western Naval Command (WNC), a fortnight ago, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), WNC, Rear Admiral Ibok Ibas has pledged to reinstate the synergy between both services.

The FOC made this disclosure when he paid a courtesy call to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Mamman Tsafe, in his office in Lagos alongside other senior naval officers.

Both naval and police personnel had engaged in a show of shame in the Area B Command in Apapa area of the state when they engaged each other in a gun duel that would have spiralled out of control but for the intervention of the top hierarchy of both forces.

According to report, some policemen on duty at Trebor roundabout had arrested the motorcycle of a naval personnel for violating the ban on commercial motorcycles in the state by the governor.

An argument ensued and escalated into fisticuffs. The naval personnel was said to have called for backup from his base and they stormed the Area B Command and engaged the police in a gun duel.

Although the courtesy call by Ibas was part of the familiarisation tour he embarked on since his assumption of office this year, THISDAY gathered that it was primarily to mend fences over the clash and chart a new course for future workings.

He said, "It is in place for families to quarrel but it is our desire that when we have such friction, we will handle it in a way that will not bring the service to disrepute.

"At the higher echelon of both services, we never have to deal with such issues because of the understanding that exists but the same does not apply to the lower cadre of the services."
