By Dele Momodu

Fellow Nigerians, I’m not about to discuss football or our ill-fated participation at the London 2012 Olympics. It is better not to write on what has brought ignominy and despair on a country of 160 million people or more. We should have known the outcome of this misadventure from the outset and it would have been less painful had we reduced our last minute investment to the barest minimum like Ghana did. The Republic of Ghana was more realistic and less wasteful by avoiding our unique type of jamboree, and spending little on a few athletes and sports officials. But that won’t happen in Nigeria.

It is not in our normal character to manage government money and resources properly. We often compete about who can outspend the other. Access to government money is usually seen as an invitation to treat. And our civil servants have perfected the art and science of manipulating the system for their own desired effect and needs. It is not entirely their fault. They always look out for a weak leader and cash in on his weak points. Our citizens assist them to establish such leaders. The solution is for us to upgrade our system by voting out those who have insufficient ability and capacity to rebuild a dilapidated Nigeria and vote in a new crop of technocrats who care less about primordial politicking. Something must give sooner than later.

It should be obvious even to the most rabid admirer, believer, supporter and defender of the Jonathan administration that this Federal Government, as currently constituted, is incapable of leading Nigeria out of the doldrums. I will try to be charitable by saying the President is doing his best but unfortunately that best falls far short of what Nigeria needs at this time. While many may argue, in their usual cliché, that the problems of Nigeria were not created by Dr Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan, we can also indict him for selling us the dummy that he had the capacity to give fresh air to Nigerians. A man should never promise what he does not possess. Only last year Dr Jonathan criss-crossed Nigeria in a marathon campaign and assured Nigerians of heavens and the earth if voted into power. Dr Jonathan’s spin doctors did their utmost best to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that the man had the magic wand to solve all our problems and many citizens swallowed their well-decorated hyperbole hook line and sinker.

It never occurred to those who bought the lies at a premium to look back and check the man’s pedigree or records of performance since he became Deputy Governor over a decade earlier. Today the expensive grandstanding has come home to roost and Nigerians are licking their wounds in various corners wishing this was only a bad dream, a nightmare that would soon evaporate once they awaken. Unfortunately, it is stark reality and we have to live with it for four agonising years since that is our electoral cycle. As for me and my house, we are already looking beyond the present debacle and only seeking ways to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated by most Nigerians.

I’m convinced that it won’t take much to get rid of an incompetent government in the next election. There is, in fact, no better time than this period when many members of the ruling party are confessing privately, and some openly, that we’ve never had things so bad in our country. The government has been pathetically slow and indecisive in taking many actions that could propel Nigeria forward.

Its profligacy reminds one of those days of the National Party of Nigeria when politicians spent and wasted money as if it was going out of vogue. In reality, a country where its citizens need every basic necessity of life cannot afford the outlandish lifestyles of our rambunctious politicians. The only man who could have arrested this terrible waste of public resources is himself the chief culprit. I often wonder why it is impossible for an average Nigerian politician to have pity and compassion upon Nigeria. I would have seen a sign of hope if the President and his team had agreed to live by example and by tightening their own belts.

Unfortunately for Nigeria, the beat goes on and none of the big politicians is ready to make any sacrifice for the nation. I know that no country has ever made it without the love and patriotism of its leaders and citizens. President Jonathan and his team behave as if all there is to life is flying around like birds of passage. They are incapable of seeing the bigger picture of being presented with the rare opportunity to become great people of history. They are blowing away their chances at the altar of myopia. It is their lives to live and our duty to stop them from dragging us down with them. No matter how much we try to advise and admonish them, it is clear they have passed caring about building a solid future for Nigeria. They are in power to maintain the status quo for of decay for Nigerians but self aggrandisement for the political elite. It is their turn to partake in the cutting and eating the national cake. And grumblers like me should wait for our turn. Their vision is that small.

What is worse is that they even see the next election as mere routine and nothing can stop them from winning and completing a second term by hook or by crook. They refuse to understand that the people have the power to sack poor and ineffective leaders. Their assumption is based on the perceived docility of our people. Perhaps they were right to believe so before now but the times have changed. The level of frustration in Nigeria today is unprecedented and mass suffering is uniting the sufferers at the speed of light. Only the people benefitting from the state of backwardness would not see or feel the boiling anger in the land. If we can’t save them from themselves, we should be able to rescue ourselves from them.

This is the main reason I have been thinking hard and came up with my dream team. What Nigeria needs today is a government of the brightest Nigerians regardless of political affiliations. We must begin to de-emphasise politics and elevate leadership to its rightful position. Most countries are pushing their best men and women forward for leadership positions and sacking incompetent leaders. Ours cannot be different. We have endured this pain for too long because we have been bullied by the godfathers into accepting their choices of some of the worst candidates. There is no doubt that we have what it takes to make Nigeria a true giant of Africa. All we have to do is dismantle the present structure that makes it impossible for good people to thrive in Nigeria.

I dream of a day we can install our most vibrant people at the centre. They are people who have established themselves before coming into government and not those who would need government to transform their lives. They must be great visionaries and not men of tiny dreams. This is obvious in the works of a few of our leaders who have sparkled or dazzled in power today.

I fantasise always about having the likes of Babatunde Fashola, the Governor of Lagos State in whatever capacity at the Federal level. This perfect gentleman has demystified how government is run in Nigeria. His mien and performance are up to international standards. I pray he would be encouraged to carry his service of excellence to Abuja in the foreseeable future. Nigeria would benefit immensely from his wealth of experience in Lagos which is a microcosm of Nigeria.

I doff my hat always to Donald Duke, the former Governor of Cross Rivers. Only a strange political party like the People’s Democratic Party would not know how to tap into the humongous talents of the great Donald who transformed Cross Rivers into an African wonder. I would love to see Donald play a centre forward role in the Government of National Unity I envisage soon for Nigeria.

Say what you will, Nasir El-Rufai is a man who has earned my admiration over the years. This power-packed technocrat is in a class of his own and he amply demonstrated this when he took on the task of sweeping the Federal Capital Territory clean of human vermin. Although he has some enemies, even they acknowledge his brilliance and big vision. I cannot wait to see him return to power to play in the big league and return the glow to governance.

Please, step forward my dear Sister, Obiageli Ezekwesili, the shining star of Africa otherwise known as Madam Due Process. I imagine what would have happened if you were allowed to complete the reforms you started in Education. Nigeria desperately needs you now than ever to help inject life into our rudderless youths. It is a shame that we allow other nations to gain from your superlative talents while we suffer from your absence.

Someone should please find me Pat Utomi, the Professor of Utopia. Many find you theoretical but Nigeria can make do with cerebral theorists who can generate positive vibes and transmit such in a manner that would energise and reinvigorate our weather-beaten compatriots. We need big dreamers like you in that powerful company of agents of change.

Anyone who has been to Akwa Ibom State lately would marvel at ethereal transformation of Uyo into a near-American wonder. I would have wished President Jonathan could do half of what Godswill Akpabio has done in his state. I strongly recommend that we need a man of Akpabio’s stupendous energy in that dream government we crave.

It is impossible not to be impressed by the meticulous planning of a Rotimi Amaechi who has taken his time to produce a new masterplan for his Rivers State of Nigeria. By the time his vigorous vision germinates and begin to blossom all knees shall bow. He’s one of the hopes of a new Nigeria we expect to materialise before long.

I love the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, who has elevated himself beyond party politics to place the nation first. It is rare to find such politicians who cannot be bullied by the almighty rulers in Aso Rock. We need more men and women like him to ensure the sanctity of the legislative arm of government.

I nearly wept when Dr Mrs Dora Akunyili was made the Minister of Information and Communications by the Yar’Adua government. I had expected her to be posted to the Ministry of Health to use her boundless energy to cleanse the place like she did at NAFDAC. This brave amazon still has a lot to offer Nigeria.

I strongly recommend that most of our current Governors emulate what Bukola Saraki did as Governor of Kwara State by picking a pet project and sticking to it. Saraki has etched the name of Kwara into the Hall of Fame as the best agricultural state in Nigeria.

I have compiled names of Nigerians who can rock this great nation positively and we shall be discussing more of them again in the near future. Clearly these men and women are mere mortals. There will be chinks in some of their armour, exposed by the nature of the administrations that they have served in. However, they have done positive things and demonstrated that they can do greater things given the right environment.  The idea is to throw up a healthy debate about the future of our country.
We can’t afford to give up on this sleeping giant.

  • Amaechi shldnt be on d list. He did pretty well in his first term in office; however ,in his second term , he has relaxed and is only interested in enriching his pocket.

  • Aminu Tambuwal presides over a house that is a disgrace to the country, and does not deserve the company of the impeccable list you have compiled. Otherwise, there is no reason to castigate Jonathan, if the head of a greedy and corrupt national assembly is glorified.

  • I noticed that you did not include yourself in the list. That is the real problem. The people we consider to be 'leaders' are the real problem of Nigeria. What we need is a genuine civil society movement that is rooted in education of Nigeria. We are too submissive in this country to whoever claims to be leader. The reason is because many are too poor and will kowtow to anybody who can supply them with the much desired bags of rice and sugar. Nigerian politicians play the politics of pauperization by distributing food to their fellow Nigerians! Even YOU can preside over Nigeria and restructure the country, with sincerity of purpose. Lack of sincerity is the real cause of Nigeria's progressive disintegration that we are helplessly witnessing today.

  • Dele, thanks for raising the issue. I hope Nigerians will make their contributions san ethnicism. It will be nice to have a healthy debate but more importantly, it will be great to address how you get them there. As for your list, it completely omits those who have not been appointed to serve governments. Pat may be the only exception, nevertheless, the records most of mentioned candidates are not anything to write home about. For instance I am still struggling to come to terms with Oby's major achievements all these years. I recall her pet project as minister of education was to shut down Unity schools. I stand to be corrected. We need that list nevertheless. Let's compile them

  • Dear brother Dele,..Nigeria does,nt need good leaders but strong institutions. No nation needs good leaders, it,s the institutions that transform the nation, it,s also the citizens themselves that could build or force the institutions to be strong!!!
Emphasis should be on building or transforming the institutions rather than hero worshipping groups of individuals.
So which is the way towards making the institutions work for the benefit of the citizens and the nation?

  • A wonderful piece from a man I personal adore. I have actually come up with this list a long time ago when I discuss with my friends/colleagues the kind of president Nigeria needs at the centre for now. I call my the committee of presidents. I have the likes of Pat Utomi, Nasir El-Rufai, Okonjo Iweala, Godswill Akpabio, Obiageli Ezekwesili, Buhari(a man that has shown zero tolerance for corruption), Rotimi Amaehi, Adams Oshiomhole, Fashola of Lagos, the ever respected Donald & Onari Duke. Let these people lead us for a period of maybe 10 to 15 years before handing over a self-accomplished technocrat/leader that has personally distinguish him or herself before seeking political power. I belief before the handover, the country would have been purged of corruption & indiscipline or anything in their shade or semblance. God help Nigeria but we must first be able to stand for ourselves. Nigerians, stop being docile.

  • Dele Momodu, in your attempt to guide us out of our current pitiable condition, you are trying to recycle some of those who have contributed to our misfortune. Apart from Prof. Pat Utomi on your, the others are recycled Leaders that achieved sub-optimization in their past assignments. Instead of Fashola who is in the midst of plenty IGR, may I suggest Comrade Adam Oshiomhole who has defied all known to logics to bring about development in a poor State, IGR and FAAC wise. Gen. Buhari must surely head such a team. To start with, we need to restructure our democracy by making less expensive to run Government and to run for elections. For instance, we do need a Bicameral Legislature and so many other duplications in the MDAs to ensure each State And Geo-political zone produce Ministers where they will still have Senior Special Advisers, Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants etc. I imagine the Country will be doomed if oil price per barrel comes to $50 or below.

Bukola himself is a wastrel. Please ask an average Kwaran about him and Saraki's family and will learn about their humongous waste of the state resources.

Unilateral suspension of local govt chairmen is another example. How about pension for former governors and their deputies? are these patriotic? He is a just pocket of trouble and Problem for RSUST, rivers state and nigeria at large. His administration has only achieved mental slavery for rivers people. Nigerians should stop being deceived by his fake boldness. Let him go and learn.

Uncle Dele may I remind you that Okonjo Iweala is conspicously missing in your list of the so-called 'Team Nigeria' and her non-inclusion makes the list completely incomplete. Be reminded once more that it was Iweala who actually nurtured Ezekwesili and others on 'Due Process' in the Obasanjo's Economic Team.
Again you didn't mention Prof.Soludo who single-handedly reformed the Nigerian Banking system and gave it international shape it's bearing today. And by the way, won't you join the team. Finally, I will like to tell you that my humble self will outperform all the people mentioned above and only God knows!

  • Dear Dele Momodu, I still have one problem with all all you anti-Jonathan campaigner and it is quite simple. Permit me to quote you "Only last year Dr Jonathan criss-crossed Nigeria in a marathon campaign and assured Nigerians of heavens and the earth if voted into power". The man campaigned for a 4 year term. How come you give him a fail mark just one year past his real mandate baffles me? Probably someone needs to explain this. It reminds me of the budget implementation brouhaha that started from the National Assembly couple of weeks ago. I will simply refer you to Simon Kolawole's article on same topic. That explains my position on the matter. I will advise Nigerians like you to be a bit more charitable with your criticisms because for a fact you cannot transform Nigeria the way you want in one year (or make it two years if you want to add the acting president era). By carrying on the way you and El-Rufai does by asking President Jonathan to resign, you are exactly like you accuse the President: Men that would say anything to get elected. Vintage Politicians. In a Country like Nigeria with our peculiar biases, I would personally advice that we keep our score cards of President Jonathan's performance till after the half term mark (2 years) and even after that wait until election time to vote him out. I make bold to say that President Obasanjo (8 years) is still our worst President till date all things considered and I can't remember most of you demonizing him the way you do. That puts a question on most of you critics. I personally conclude that most of this critics steam from tribal, regional and other parochial interests. Ask yourself: Why does President Jonathan has so much Critics in the South West/North West and not in the South-South/South-East? Food for thought.

People forget that Fashola is perfoming in Lagos because there is someone fighting the political fight for him. As much as I admire Fashola and his true and genuine Leadership/governance of Lagos State, We should not forget tat before him was Tinubu who sanitised Lagos. Tinue build the roads and layed the wonderful foundation for Fashola. From Eko hotel via Ahmadu way to Agege motor way, Apongbon, tinubu e.t.c. Tinube started the Public-private partnership initiative, and we can see the effect of it even after OBJ held Lagos allocation for almost 4years.. Lagos was running... Oooo I held you.. • Your list makes a lot of sense Bob Dee but it is likely to remain within the realm of fantasy due to our present political structure. Ethnic jingoists are already scheming for 2015 as their year to rule the country. Nigerians should be united in fighting for a decentralised Nigeria so as to make the center less attractive so that regional and local development can take its proper place in the scheme of things. Continue to use your powerful and popular column to fight for a Nigeria where there's regional and local policing, where states are free to generate their own power, where education become the responsibility of states and local education boards, where state offences are prosecuted by state prosecutors and where state criminals are incarcerated in state prisons! I think the governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and Edo states should be able to construct a modern express road linking their states with Lagos instead of relying on the present death trap called the Lagos/Ibadan express road...........

  • We dont need this list. It's not rocket science. If it is, NASA was able to achieve unexpected fit with people who are dedicated to their jobs. All we need are young energetic Nigerians who are innovative, fit-for-purpose, incorruptible and creative minded beings and not unnecessary list of persons. Bob Dee, stop all these praise singing, it will not let people know where you stand. You went with Labour Party initilally and later changed to another party to contest for the Presidential seat. Where do you stand in times of troubles? Let us know, you are neither here nor there. Be objective and stop this name calling. The true measure of a man is known when he shows where he stands with courage in times of troubles or problems. Stick to a party and campaign independently with your followers using all the available resources you have. These people you mentioned will not support in the next election. You need the masses to pull you through this. So learn from past mistakes. Bless you.

  • Unless there are other things that may bea hiden from me,otherwise Gbenga Asiru deserves our commendation. My reasons: as a foreign minister, I am impressed with the performance of his ministry,my assessment of Asiru is based on the following:when Gbagbo situation reared its ugly head in Ivory Coast, the ministry stood its ground ,confronted Gbagbo with reality;at end of this problem Nigeria triumphed. Also in Libya, there was nothing Gadaffi did not call Nigeria, even while countries like South Africa were still foot dragging on Libya, Nigeria had made her clever decision,at the end of Gadaffi Nigeria was not disgraced, the diplomatic crisis with South Africa over deportation of Nigerians also impressed me,for the very first time SA realised that Nigeria could no longer be taken for granted, except the recent lifting of Nigerians out of war-torn Syria I could not remember which regime that had treasured Nigerians in diaspora.Even against the gaints like USA and her allied, in the contest for the head of world bank, the ministry perfectly packaged its candidate ,won African support and infact support of some other candidates who eventually withdrew for Dr Iweala, although we lost in poll,we were definitely not disgraced, the visit of German Chancellor,Frau Angela Merkel is also remarkable for those who understand Germany position in today's Euro-Zone,just last week too Mrs Cliton was with us.I can keep on and on but for time and space,to me Asiru is our own active legend

Please, Nigerians are too poor to be subjected to torture and extortion through anti-people policies.

We dont want a person that would impose millions of Naira as school fees on Nigerian universities.

We dont need an arrogant dictactor that would foolishly claim to have sacked all the medical doctors or univerisity lecturers whenever there is industrial dispute!

We dont need a man that would be swift to render thousands of people homeless by demolishing their houses unjustly, without adequate notice, no any alternative, no compensation !

We dont want a repeat of the Yaba market fraud where stalls belonging to ordinary market women would be taken away from them and sold to rich money bags at cut-throat prices.

We dont want a man that suffers the poor to comfort the rich!

  • How can Rotimi Amechi be on this list bruv. This is a man who said on AIT, that we dont need visionary leaders to rule this country and that fate has always chosen leaders for us. He even went on the cite past leaders who didnt aspire to rule and ruled leaving us worse than they met us other than Abacha and IBB who shown keen interest in Aso Rock from day one. Please bruv, Amechi to me based on what I watched and heard him say on AIT is just a man of the moment and visionless. Try to get the interview and you would understand my position. Most importantly, what we need are not men of individual dreams that might be diffiult to aggregate, what we need are political parties with clearcut and well articulated programmes and manifestoes that thave the big pictures of better Nigeria. Its whe this happens that we can have sigh of relieve, parties that will throw to the electorate their "Dream Team" before election and not this stupid and bizzare "Take a bow" stands of parliament when approving presidential nominees. What about Saraki? This man and his dad single handedly killed Societe Generale Bank and sent average depositors to early graves or incapacitated for life. Our party system and structure needs total overhaul to produce "Dream Team" before election to voters who will engage each member of the "Dream Team" constructively.

Bob Dee, the writeup hasnt done justice to finding solution to a process that can throw-up our "Dream Team" as you have simply put the cart before the horse in sheer despiration and fraustration.

  • I understand that out of humility you left yourself out. I follow you on twitter and i am convinced that you have what it takes to deliver. If others are not ashamed, i am. Anytime i travel outside these shores and come back, i feel very very angry at the kind of life we live here when we can have the best of everything. How can Nigeria be at the olympics and not pick even i bronze medal.? How can we not even have a descent airport for our visitors to come in? How can we be using thousands of truck on our road to do haulage in 21st century when the rail system came into being over 100 yrs ago? How can we be going to SA to treat minor ailments when we can have decent hospitals here? How can we be sending our children to Ghana to study? I am embarrassed and ashamed to be called a Nigerian but i do love this country.

  • Must we play politics in everything? Otherwise, why on earth did you include the speaker?!

  • Hey Dele, I am one of your senior admirers. Before now, I always feel, you still possess that firebrand ideology in moving Nigeria forward. But your piece these days portray you as "out of touch" with events around the country.
Agreed, Jonathan is not living up to expectations, but the bunch of nonentities you mentioned as Nigeria Saviors are not what they are. For example, Sola Saraki stole more than what he gave back to the indigenes of Kwara. For him to have accomplished one item out of a lot of things he should have done, doesn't make him an accomplished ex-governor.
And you even have the effrontery to mention the current speaker of the house as an achiever. This is a disservice to us older people, who once believed, you came out of the June 12 a new breed Nigerian. The speaker is not different from his predecessor, both are rogues.
Bottom-line, I am disappointed by your recent pronunciation of the so-called accomplished Nigerians.
