Tavia Trojan has played themselves into history book as one of the winners of the MTN’2012 International Polo Tournament.
The Ayo Olashoju and Kunle Tinubu side who are the defending champions of the Lagos Open Cup, made good their pre event rating with a thumping 13-61/2 victory over local rivals, Lagos HST, to clinch the royal crown.
Played in honour of the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu 1 who is the grand patron of the highbrow Lagos Polo Club, the cup remains one of the most popular subsidiary prizes decided annually during the MTN polo festival.
Tavia Trojan parading their chief predator, Santiago Cernadas from Argentina, dominated the five chucker encounter which was watch by a full house including the Kabiyesi who arrived the Ribadu Road venue of the prestigious MTN event with other white cap chiefs.
That victory also sealed an Open Cup final place for Tavia/Trojan, their second in two years, while HST whose hope of winning their first Open Cup title ran into rough patches after losing to Tavia Trojan, are making do with the Oba of Lagos runners-up prize.
Former champions, Fifth Chukker had earlier defeated Lagos Ironclad in a six chukker duel to win the Italian Ambassador Cup. That victory also guaranteed them a place in the final of the MTN sponsored Majekodunmi Cup.
Kano Manarat who was playing their first MTN international tournament in Lagos was proud winners of Governor Fashola Cup, while Lagos Machine defeated Lagos Ikoyi to win the General Hassan Katsina Cup.
