Mr. Labaran Maku

By Adebiyi Adedapo in Umuahia

There seem to be a sharp disagreement between the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku and the Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media Mr. Bolaji Adebiyi over the management of Local Government accounts.

Adebiyi during the National Good Governance Tour in Umuahia the Abia state capital, called for the scrapping of the state-local government joint account, while Maku had supported the joint account but condemned its abuse.

Adebiyi stated that the development of Nigeria would continue to be hampered except local governments were given more powers required to facilitate development.

He added that the local councils could be better structured to facilitate development at the grassroots.
According to him, the present arrangement would not inspire development in the rural areas as funds meant for the local councils were deducted at different levels of governments.
