Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa was born on December 1, 1948 in Fadan Kagoma, Jema’a Local Government Kaduna State. He attended St. Mary’s Secondary School, Fadan Kaje and St. John’s College, Kaduna. On completion of his secondary education, he proceeded to the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria where he graduated with a B. Sc (Social Sciences) in June 1972.

After graduation, he joined the Civil Service of the then North Central State and served in various capacities and was first appointed the Divisional Officer (D.O), Birnin  Gwari Division of the North Central State from December 1974 to July 1975.

The late governor, who was more of a career civil servant than a politician, had risen through the ranks in the service. Among the several positions he had held during his career in the civil service were; Secretary to the State Lands Investigation Commission (Military Governor’s office) in January 1980-December 1980,  Principal Secretary, Parastatals Development (Military Governor’s Office) from January 1981 to March 1983.

He was the Secretary/Chief Administrative Officer of Kaduna State Agricultural Development Project in March 1984 to December 1985.

From December, 1985-August, 1986, he was Sole appointed sole Administrator of Saminaka Local Government. Yakowa later rose to the position of a Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare between 1987 and 1988 and was later moved to the Ministry of Works and Transport.
In August 1990, he transferred his service to the federal civil service and was the Director of Ecological funds in the Presidency. He was later to the Federal Ministry of water Resource as Director of Finance and Supplies.

From 1994 to 1997, he served as a Commissioner during the military but returned to the federal civil service where as Director, Joint Services, and Ministry of Defense in 1998.

In 1999, he was appointed Minister of Solid Minerals Development by the administration of Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar. In June 1999 to 2003, he was Member, National Economic Intelligence Committee Presidency.  He was the Secretary to the Kaduna State Government during the administration of former governor Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi between 2003 to 2005 until in July of 2005 when he was appointed Deputy Governor following the death of Mr. Stephen Shekari ,who was the deputy to Makarfi.

Yakowa became the governor of Kaduna State on May 20, 2010 following the appointment of former governor Namadi Sambo as Vice President. He completed Sambo’s first term as governor and won the April 2011 governorship polls.

On May 20, 2010, the day after former governor Namadi Sambo had become the vice president, Yakowa was sworn in as the 20th governor of Kaduna State.  To reassure people in the ethnically and religiously mixed state, he said during his inaugural speech that “I am governor for all, irrespective of religious or tribal affiliation.’’
