Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN)
As muslims in the country join their counterparts worldwide to celebrate the Eid-el-Kabir, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), has enjoined all Nigerians to conform to the tenets of the rule of law saying without law and order, no society would prosper.
In his Sallah message to the muslims, the governor stressed that the act of obedience as demonstrated by Prophet Ibrahim when he was commanded by Almighty Allah to sacrifice his only son, Ismail, was a compelling factor for all muslims to lead from the front in the maintenance of law and order in our society.
“Eid-El-Kabir, as you all know, is a period when we commemorate what is, perhaps, the highest demonstration of dedication and sacrifice by any human when Prophet Ibrahim, in obedience to the commandment of Almighty Allah, took his only son, Ismail, to sacrifice to Allah, but was, for this act of obedience, provided a ram as substitute,” the governor said.
Noting that the key word in Prophet Ibrahim’s act was ‘obedience’, Fashola further declared, “our nation is greatly challenged by the inconsistencies in our attitude to the rule of law; yet the great religions of the world preach obedience as the only condition for our close relationship with Almighty Allah.”
“The significance of the act cannot be more relevant at any other time in our history than today when we need all hands on deck to build an enduring democracy; an egalitarian society where every citizen will have the opportunity to attain his or her potentials in life,” the governor said.
He implored all Nigerians, particularly the muslims, to use the period of the celebration to rededicate themselves to the maintenance of law and order in the society adding, “Without the rule of law, no society can progress and without law and order, life will be both intolerable and unbearable.”
While wishing all Lagosians a happy celebration, the governor pointed out, “We are here because we have a duty; we have a responsibility as a government and that responsibility includes the safety and security of lives. This decision has informed some of the many things the government is doing currently in the transportation and road safety sector.”
