 Farouk Lawan

The suspended Chairman of the House Ad-Hoc Committee on the Monitoring of Subsidy Regime, Hon. Farouk Lawan, yesterday opened his defence of the $620,000 bribery allegation levelled against him by the Chairman, Zenon Oil and Gas, Mr. Femi Otedola.

Lawan, who was interrogated behind closed doors by the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges, which began investigation into the allegation yesterday, said what he collected was money and not a bribe.

Restating his earlier statement to the media, Lawan said he collected $500,000 from Otedola not as a bribe but as exhibit that he planned to use as evidence of the attempt by the oil marketer to influence the report of the subsidy probe.

Otedola, in his account of the transaction between the duo, had claimed that Lawan made repeated demands of him for money to stop the ad hoc committee from indicting his company, adding that he had to bring in security agents who advised him to play along with the lawmaker in a bid to nail him.

The security agents, he added, provided the serialised dollar bills that were given to Lawan, who collected the money without knowing that he was being recorded.

A source told THISDAY that Lawan appeared confident throughout his session with the Ethics Committee, but he was rather evasive when asked about the whereabouts of the money he admitted to have collected.

Unlike in the past when he claimed that the money was with the Chairman, House Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, Hon. Adams Jagaba, Lawan said the security agencies would establish the whereabouts of the money during their investigations.
On his part, Jagaba in different letters to the House Speaker, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal and acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, had denied Lawan’s claim.

THISDAY checks showed that besides his oral testimony, Lawan also tendered documents said to contain call logs obtained from a telecommunication service provider to substantiate his claim that Otedola initiated the transaction and not him.

It was learnt that the committee might recall Lawan to give further clarifications on his testimony as the investigation progresses.

Earlier, Lawan, who had arrived at the venue of the committee at 1.05 pm, expressed surprise at the heavy media presence. He expressed pleasantries with his colleagues and reporters before taking his seat.

Chairman, House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Hon. Gambo Dan-Musa, gave a synopsis of the case under investigation and shortly after, ordered reporters to excuse the committee to enable it interrogate Lawan in camera.

Dan-Musa said the committee’s mission was to establish the facts of the bribery allegation and after a series of meetings, it decided to invite Lawan, Otedola and other stakeholders involved in the matter to appear before it at different times.

“The committee is set to carry out its assignment with a very high sense of commitment. We shall strive to be fair and just to all parties involved. It is our belief that at the end of the day, our report will meet the expectations of the House and indeed that of the Nigerian public,” Dan-Musa said.

Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Hon. Zakari Mohammed, who addressed reporters later, said the decision to conduct the investigation secretly was to create a conducive atmosphere for Lawan and others to give their testimonies freely and without distraction.

“You know that it is an investigative hearing and we want to avoid a situation where his (Lawan) presentation would bungle certain people’s submissions.

“Of course, the police are doing their own investigations and they are doing that in camera. So we believe that this also should be done in camera to at least give everybody some protection and the freedom to say all that he or she knows.

“If you are sure there are cameras, there might be certain things witnesses might want to hide. So it is not as if we are trying to hide anything but we want to ensure that we do a thorough job of this investigation,” Mohammed said.

  • Its only in Nigeria that you hear this kind of nonsense. This man should be in jail awaiting trial. In places where corruption is not part and parcel of the society, his trial will be concluded within two years at the most. In Nigeria, after a few months, this case will die a natural death. How can you develop as a country?the government either has no clue, doesn't understand that with this level of corruption, none of his plans will succeed.

  • FARUK would find it difficult to successfully defend himself because he failed to declare the money to the appropriate authority at the right time. It does not matter who initiated the transaction. The question is why did he keep the money until Odetola spoke?

  • What kind of people are these? Haba Nigeria when has bride now been baptised as 'money collection'. So what do Police do with the usual N20- is it 'money collection' as well to nail bus drivers. Please divide this mad country and let everyone become responsible to build or distroy their own.

  • They should stop deceiving Nigerians. Lawan and Otedola should both be arrested. Firstly, why did Farouk say he kept the 'bribe" money with Hon. Jagaba who has publicly denied receiving or being in possesion of the funds? Secondly, why did Lawan request that Otedola's companies should be removed from the list of beneficiaries of the fraudulent subsidy claims? Thirdly, Why did Otedola and the "SSS" wait for over a month to expose Lawan? The House committee on ethics should simply ask Lawan in the presence of Jagaba where he kept the money. Lawan should also be asked why he requested for Zenon oil et al be removed from the report and also why did the House agree to remove the names from the report only to include it when the lid was blown open by Otedola? We all know that efforts are being made to cover up this situation but Nigerians know the truth. A bribe was given by Otedola and taken by Lawan. It does not matter who initiated it. Our father who art in Otta has told us that they are all criminals in the House of Assembly and we do not have to look too far to see them. We all expect the "suspects" to go scotfree as usual but Nigerians know the truth. Our leaders are just greedy people who do not care about the future of Nigeria, they are just shamelessly enriching themselves at the expense of the masses. Their time will come someday soon.

  • I don't know why people are calling for Otedolas arrest.Do you arrest a complainer without establishing criminal charges against him? I am of the view that the police or sss were too hasty, to disclose the deal.they should have waited to nab other partakers in the deal.i am sure there are other members of the committee involved. For Otedola, what Nigerians need to ask for is that the national assembly should conduct an open investigation into claims by Otedola that he is not really involved in the scam as he has claimed By adding his companies names back into the indicted list without proper investigation will render the entire re
    port questionable.

  • The cancerous corruption in Nigeria will continue to ravage our country because Nigerians are their own worst enemies. If you enriched yourself at the expense of others, your community will held you as a hero and series of titles will be accorded to you. In Nigeria, as long as you've the money, you can torture anybody irrespective of one's well earned social status. No government or institution will ever reverse this disease until Nigerians realize the menace this trend is going to cause for decades and social impact on the generations to come. The irony is that the country is so messed up that its citizens have no idea of what government is doing because most times the impact is not felt by the people. A country where politicians disbursed taxpayers money as if the money is their personal wealth and therefore the people should worship the ground the walk on.

  • (Dis)honorable Farouk Lawan is suffering from hallucination. This is a man who said that he never collected money, only for him to turn around the following day admitting collecting the same but as an evidence that he was being induced with bribe. If his claim is true, how come he moved motion for the removal of Zenon and Synopsis from the list of indicted companies in the House of mis(representatives)? Perhaps, Channels TV needs to send the CD of the show of shame to him.

  • It's quite unfortunate that the pots in Nigerian society are beginning to call kettle black.
This is a distraction and diversion from the revolutionary trend that has begun to sharpen our larger society.
I am not a partisan politician, if i ever belong to any at all. Only to fulfill the axiom that all human beings are political animals.
The radical socialists and personalities amidst us are being crucified to discourage the fewer ones that remain. Don't be deceived. It is the devil strategy to slow down progressive and radical revolution that would culminate into a New Nigeria.
If others are being deceived, I refuse to join the bad wagon. Tai Solain of blessed memory nearly suffered same set back , as Peoples Bank-Chairman.
Ride on LAWAN, a courageous spokesman, polital analyst, fearless politician and reasonable Nigerian. Don't allow the callous bourgeios of our society to kill what you stand for.
Other progressives should learn the lesson rather than criticizing, lest the devil of of our society take advantage of them. Shame to evil detractors and seducers. Shame to destiny and revolutionaries killers
GOD BLESS NIGERIA with more courageous men and women.
