Lagos Airport
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, which is the busiest in the country, has continued to record increase in passenger movement.
According to the Regional Manager, Murtala Mohammed Airport and South West , Mr. Edward Olarerin, there has been an increase in both passenger and cargo movements at the Murtala Mohammed Airport Ikeja in the last two years.
Olarerin who disclosed this to Aviation Correspondents at the Lagos airport, said that over five million passengers arrived and departed from the airport in 2009 and over six million in 2010, representing 11.41 per cent increase in passenger movement.
According to the Regional manager, aircraft movement rose from 86,552 in 2009 to 96,599 in 2010 representing 11.60 per cent increase.
Olarerin declared that cargo volume in 2009 was over one hundred and seventy six million kilograms, while it increased to over two hundred million kilograms in 2010, representing an increase of over 16 per cent.
The Regional Manager also said that the airport recorded 70 per cent increase in passenger, aircraft and cargo movement. He attributed the sustained growth in traffic over the years to a creative and focused management team.
He announced that the four conveyor belts will be installed to commence operations before the end of the year, while a new contractor has been engaged to address the issue of the chillers of the cooling systems at the airport.
Olalerin assured of the improved service levels to meet customers need , adding that 2012 will be brighter with positive signs envisaged.
The MMA boss revealed that with stability in government, more international airlines have signified interest in doing business in the country , adding that Nigerians have started appreciating the need to travel by air as the fastest and safest means.
