The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State yesterday condemned the recent free-for-all- fight which ensued among members of the state chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) during their membership registration exercise in Ilorin, the state capital, over the weekend.
The party said the development, if unchecked, would affect the unique status of the state as a ‘State of Harmony’.
The supporters of two leading leaders of the ACN had clashed at Ilorin Grammar School during the party membership registration exercise, which resulted in some members of the party sustaining varying degrees of injuries due to the use of dangerous weapons by the two groups in the state.
But, the PDP in a statement signed by the state Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Mash’ud Adebimpe, said: “The state is known for peace and harmony and should not be turned to other thing that will erase its unique status of harmony. It is now more than ever obvious to the good people of the state that the ACN in the state is against peace in view of the incident.”
The party queried that: “Why should a simple democratic process lead to violence and political terrorism?”
The PDP cautioned ACN members not to defile the subsisting peace in the state, stressing that: “Kwara does not need the distraction that the ACN it trying to foist on it.”
The party noted that, “As a party that believes and upholds democratic norms, we condemn in its entirety, the ACN recent violence in the state been promoted by the gladiators in their quest for 2015 gubernatorial ticket which has now taken ethnic dimension.”
The party, therefore, said: “It is on record that the PDP governments in Kwara State since 2003 have succeeded in benchmarking excellence in governance and it has become a reference point for positive changes in the country.”
