Anti terrorism policemen and other security agents have been deployed to virtually all the installations of telecommunications service providers in Kano.

The telecoms masts of two major service providers, MTN and Airtel have been attacked within the past few days by unknown gunmen. The affected installations were the MTN mast in Hotoro and the Airtel installation in Sharada.

Kano State Police command said the damage to the installations was not serious, adding that armed security personnel had been deployed to all the installations of the service providers in the state.

Officials of the state police command disclosed to that the Inspector-General of Police had directed for the set up special units in the police to ensure the safety of telecommunications equipment and installations.

The official, who spoke under anonymity, said: “We have taken this action as directed by the IGP, so it’s our duty to ensure security of lives and properties of all the citizens”

It could be recalled that the Boko Haram group claimed responsibility for the attacks, claiming that the telecoms service providers aided the police and other security agencies in cracking down on their members.
