Setting aside protocol President Goodluck Jonathan Monday held an impromptu parley with top security chiefs at the Presidential, Abuja, hours before the rendezvous for such weekly security meetings usually scheduled for Tuesday.

The parley is coming barely 24 hours after the renewed spate of violence in Jos, Plateau State, where more than a hundred people have lost their lives, including Senator Gyang Dantong and the Majority Leader of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Gyang Fulani.

For three-hours the doyens of the nation’s security apparatus met with the President, while State House correspondents waited outside for the traditional press briefing by the National Security Adviser (NSA) or his proxy the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) or any of the security chiefs.

Instead they played pranks with the reporters passing them from one to the other; while refusing to say anything individually.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen.Azubuike Ihejirika told reporters to meet the CDS, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin. The CDS simply passed them onto the NSA who was yet to have come out of the Villa then.

About 10 minutes after the other security chiefs had left, Dasuki came out and referred them to Petinrin for comments.

When the NSA was reminded that it was his turf to meet the press and the CDS has indicated that he will do so, he asked without breaking his stride as he strode towards his car: “Is that what the CDS said (that I am the one to talk)? Ok. I am now saying ‘go back to the CDS.’”

He shunned information passed to him that the CDS had left the State House and muzzled his way into his waiting car with his security detail.

However, responding to a journalist’s inquiry about the killing of the lawmakers in Jos, Dasuki replied: “Is that what happened? No, that was not what happened!” as his driver sped off.

A couple of days ago the NSA had admonished journalists to report his movements and speeches accurately, saying that his experience with them so far has been unpleasant.

Sources told THISDAY that the security chiefs came out fuming because the President was visibly unsatisfied with developments in Plateau State despite his recent reshuffle of the apparatchik.

Sunday night President Jonathan had given them the marching order to produce the perpetrators of the murder of the lawmakers who were attending the funeral of their kinsmen killed a day before.

Speaking through his spokesperson, Dr Reuben Abati, the President ordered that all the relevant security agencies must ensure that all those involved in the killing are brought to book.

"The Federal Government is working hard to ensure that there is a check on impunity. That much was demonstrated with the recent changes made in the top echelon of our security architecture especially with the appointment of the new National Security Adviser,” Abati told reporters late Sunday night.

Those who attended the impromptu meeting included, Dasuki, Petinrin; Minister of State, Defence, Mrs. Olusola Obada; Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olubolade; Minister of Interior, Mr. Abba Moro; acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Muhammed Abubakar; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Ola Ibrahim; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Umar; and the Director-General, State Security Service, Mr. Ita Ekpenyong.

  • Jonathan should be wise and smart and read the handwriting on the wall because he is the ultimate target of the islamist terrorists that has besieged the Northern Nigeria. The main islamists terrorists causing all these havoc of murder/genocide/crime against humanity are members of JTF and some operate from the Military barracks sponsored by retired Islamic Military Generals and when they finish their murderous acts they go back to their barracks and pretend and plan for the next operations.Nigerian intelligence units should be wise and smart, they should be embarking on all night counts of all armed junior officers in the barracks and their place of residence and monitor their movements. Is it not thesame JTF in Jos that had an effrontery to kidnap Mikel Obi father and took him away in their military jeep to Kano and start asking for ransome? Let the Governor of Platueau state nominate the military personnel/Policemen who should form a new JTF in Plateau. If it were in a civilized Country at least 50,000 Moslem Youths in Plateau should have been arrested, investigated and profiled to establish the culprits. The funny situation is allowing Police/Military Moslems to haunt down islamists terrorists and that strategy cannot work.GEJ should be bold and audacious to nip this crisis in the bud else it will consume his presidency. The evil seeds sowed by General Gowon/Gen. Danjuma since 1966/67 has now germinated and grown so big that it is now consuming their own people in thesame fashion they used genocide/crime against humanity to destroy other people.

  • you are saying dt d security forces should be divided along religious and ethnic lines? what manner of advice is this? some people do not know what leadership is all about and dt is why their mouth can be opened widely. so if you are in the c-in-c's shoe, this is how you will do? .

  • Yes Barry what you are saying has an elemnet of truth, Because the question I always ask is this, why is it that the Terroris are from the umbralla of Islam? lets look at reality, who are the Boko haram? are they not Muslems? can you separate the two btw a Muslim and Boko Haram? to me all the Boko Haram are Muslems. I think Islam should explain this issue between Islam and Boko Haram, how can you convince a Christian who has seen every sunday churches are being attacked. Pls let me say this I am not in support for Christians to attack innocent muslim NO that is not Christianity but also, why is it always Christians are being attacked first? can a Muslem explain this clearly? To the church I will want to suggest we should be more pro-active than treating the problem. I know there are good Muslems that doesn't like what is happening but the question still is How can you convince a christian that this has nothing to do with Islam?
