National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola
President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme and former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, were among eminent Nigerians who honoured the first Barrister-at-Law in the Northern Nigeria, Alhaji Abdul’Ganiyu Abdul ‘Rasaq, on his 85th birthday.
President Jonathan, who was represented by the National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, enjoined Nigerians to emulate the good legacies of the first republic politician.
The octogenarain in his message to Nigerians, specifically legal practitioners, both at the Bar and Bench, sued for fairness in the profession.
He stated that the legal profession had the primary responsibility of ensuring that justice was done even to the common man.
According to him, Justice should not be bought and sold, it should be as of right to everybody.
He also advised politicians to protect the interest of the electorate, urging them to emulate the virtue of Nigerian First Republic leaders.
He noted that electing a leader is a serious social engagement, as he said political office holders must as a matter of obligation protect the interest of their electorates.
“Election is not a joke, there is nothing better than good governance, you will not believe this, Sadauna owns a mud house, the same house that he has as a student was the house he maintained. Also Awolowo and Azikwe did not amass the crazy wealth politicians are having now,” he said.
Earlier, the guest lecturer, Ustaz Saddam Folorunsho Fagba, urged children of the celebrant to follow the footsteps of their father by contributing positively to the development of the Surulere community in Ilorin, the Ilorin emirate and Nigeria at large.
Also in attendance were the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Alpha Belgore, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Gali Umar Na’Abba, former National Chairman of the PDP, Okwesilesie Nwodo, Alhaji Tanko Yakksai, Justice Binta Nyako, Alhaja Bola Shagaya and the two House of Representatives members from Ilorin, Hon. Muhammed Mustapha and Dr. Ali Ahmed.
