President Goodluck Jonathan

Muhammad Bello

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday took up critics of his trip to Brazil to attend the United Nation's Earth Summit Rio+20 despite the troubling security situation in Kaduna and Yobe States, which both came under terrorist attacks a few days to his departure.

Jonathan, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, from Rio de Janeiro, dispelled criticism that his trip amounted to abdicating his responsibility to Nigerians.

He also cautioned the opposition against cashing in on every crisis in the country to score political points.

His trip also got the backing of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which after its weekly meeting yesterday in Abuja, said through the Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, that the president could discharge his responsibility from anywhere in the world, given the technological advancements in telecommunications.

The president has come under fire since he left for the summit on Monday, a day after Boko Haram, in coordinated attacks, bombed three churches in Kaduna and Zaria.

The attacks, carried out by suicide bombers, triggered reprisals that forced the Kaduna State government to impose a 24-hour curfew on the state.

However, since his departure, the House of Representatives, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), among others, have strongly condemned the trip, contending that it was unnecessary given the security situation in the country.

They had insisted that the president could have delegated any other government official to represent him at the UN Earth Summit.

But the president faulted the position of the opposition, saying that before his departure for Brazil on Monday, he had met with security chiefs and was satisfied with their plans to control the security situation in Kaduna and Yobe, where Boko Haram had launched attacks on troops deployed in the state, shortly before the president’s departure.

“The crisis in Kaduna and Yobe occurred almost on the eve of the president's departure for this event and commitments had been made,” the presidential statement said, adding: “The conference, Rio+20, is very important and nobody can doubt that.

“The issues that will be discussed at this conference are also issues that are relevant to Nigeria's interest. It is also an opportunity for Nigeria to promote its interest in terms of its place in global community.

“In any event, it is not as if government has abandoned the situation at home. Security agencies are there, they are on top of the situation. Before the president left, he met with security chiefs. The business of leadership cannot just stop because there is a crisis there.

“I think what we can do is to appeal to the opposition not to always play politics with everything; that is the major challenge we face, people always want to play politics with everything.

“If the president had refused to come to Rio, the same persons will turn around and say that there was an important conference attended by world leaders and the Nigerian president stayed away from it.

“It is as if there is nothing you can do to please our people. It is not that Nigeria is going to lose anything by Mr. President's presence here; rather, the country is going to gain a lot from his presence here.

“He is here serving the interest of Nigerians, it is not as if he has abandoned his responsibility,” the statement said.

Jonathan, who met with the Nigerian community in Brazil soon after his arrival, assured them that Nigeria would make faster progress in its quest for development if all Nigerians back his administration’s efforts to transform the country.

Also Wednesday, Maku told State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting that there was nothing wrong with the president’s trip to Brazil in the face of the security situation in the country as his absence had created no vacuum in governance.

Maku flayed critics of the Brazilian trip, saying Vice-President Namadi Sambo has the constitutional backing to take over whenever the president is absent.
“The president can take decisions from anywhere in the world. His absence will not hamper his power to act. The vice-president effectively takes charge of affairs once the president is out of Nigeria and he is in touch with the president on an hourly basis.

“There is no vacuum, the most important thing is that the president and the vice-president work harmoniously and are in constant touch.

“If the president panics, what will the people do?  We must stop making politics out of the unfortunate incidents going on in Northern Nigeria. The world is now a virtual society; that the president is out of the country, doesn't mean he cannot make decision on a matter," Maku said.

He said that the president has provided leadership on this matter, adding, "Let people make meaningful contributions on how to end this and not play cheap politics and engage in political blackmail. For those turning this to politics, they should re-examine their level of patriotism to this country.”

Maku accused the president’s critics of ignoring the terrorists and haranguing the president, adding that the debate had not shown solidarity with the president.

“What is required at this time is cooperation with the president. He is on a working visit to Brazil and not on a holiday," he added.
On whether the government would continue to subsidise petrol, Maku said if the government continues to do that, the endemic corruption in the sector would not abate.

  • Dear Mr President,

As I write this comment, I am minded by the rules of civility and perhaps biblical injunctions demanding respect for your office in voicing dissenting opinion.

But in all good conscience, I can say that you are (even in a quarter of your administration) the worst president this country has ever seen!!! Your sense of priority is deplorable! Your general lack of appreciation of public sentiment towards your government is extremely boggling! It is unfortunate that we do not have credible poll rating in this country to give you the true position of you standing with the Nigerian people (regardless of whatever your kitchen cabinet of praise worshippers or your wordsmith P.A. are telling you).

You have failed this country in every way possible and its just your first year! Your administration is like a baby in the womb with no heartbeat in the first trimester, but the mother just carries it to birth to deliver the stillborn on the 9th month. That is exactly how Nigerians are waiting for 2015 for you.

What possible importance could your being in Brazil at this critical hour have that you cannot delegate that trip to your senior aides? Pray tell, is that not why this country is funding your endless list of hangers-on aides? You clearly do not consider a threat to national security as a threat to the legitimacy of the mandate you wield; if so you would have regarded the Sunday-Sunday bombings as a threat to your office, in the same vein as an attempted coup! You ought to regard these would you have found going to Brazil at this time attractive (even with all the shameless excuses being made on your behalf) if there was an attempt to depose you? You should regard the incessant killings of Nigerians in the same vein!!

I'm glad I did not vote for you, and come 2015, I believe Nigerians (including the now deeply regretful ones that voted for you) will excise sentiment and vote wisely.

God bless and keep this country and save it from its leaders [nay! Rulers]

Straight from the horses horses mouth this really goes to show how much 'our dear president' holds nigerians to heart. Total lack of patriotism and regard for human life. Obviously, your security agents are not doing a good job! Since his inaugeration it has been nothing but unrest and bombing. It's time we all put aside our uncalled for anger and barbarism to over throw a government that does not value the life of its citizens!

  • Dr. Reuben Abati is a monumental disgrace! this is the same man who criticised & consistently condemned the late President Musa Yaradua in his sick days in KSA now putting up a defence for GEJ that he can rule Nigeria from any part of the world due to technological advancement. How much has Nigeria advanced technologically in the last 3 (three) years? what a shame! As for the postulations of the FEC, this is not strange as this same position has been played over and again since Abacha years in which those around the corridors of power defend the indefensible until God puts them to shame. God will shame all enemies of Nigeria posing as leaders.

Rather than blame the opposition for his travails, GEJ should sit down and do what is expected of him as a leader.

GEJ can now condemn the use of Social media as negative because he is being critised for poor job forgetting that this same media was used to ganer votes that propelled him to power. Neither GEJ nor any of his apostles can authoritatively say that the Security agencies have shown enough capacity to handle the security challenges Nigeria is facing as it is very clear it gets worse by the day. People are dying and government has been rhetorical; paying lip service to the very serious issues.

Only God Almighty will save us as it is glaring that this current government is incapable of improving out lots in this country.

  • Reuben please shut your mouth. You were the same person who criticised Yar Adua in his dying days, when the nation was in turmoil and he was no where to be seen. Now you have traveled with Jonathan and you can open your mouth. What is he doing in Brazil that Sambo cannot do, while he takes care of the problems in Nigeria. $620,000 is missing within 2 months and he travels with obviously more and there is the ghost story of 1000000 houses yearly. From where and in which states? Who are the planners of this ghost projects? Will they be modern towns or just the same cramped up "cities" in urban or rural townships? You are all just wicked and our patience is running out. We have been patient with successive Govts only to be fooled like idiots. When we march up to the rock, you will probably spray us with bullets. You are obviously not different from the Boko Haram causing problems in North, only yours is global.

The fact that all these chaos and what have you stirred up in the days of GEJ does not mean he should not be accorded the respect due him. people should be conscious of this when making any point. It is the will of God to have him there and your insults will not in anyway change anything.

  • If the president fails to attend the international summit then the desires of the terrorist group who wish to derail the developmental process of this nation would have been partially achieved. In as much as the president was on an official assignment on behalf of his people, then the arguments by his critics would be ajudged as FALLACY. Let every politician and member of the national assembly who claims to be patrotic citizens of this country propose a slash in their salary scale to that of the common civil servant, then we would no that the interest of this country rely lies in their hearts. LET POLITICAL GANGSTERS STOP POLITICISING EVERY SITUATION, USING EVEN THE LIVES OF NIGERIANS TO SCORE POLITICAL POINTS.

  • For once nigerians lets talk with good sense, this insurgent has been in the nation since 2009,and there having been a solution to it.So the president trip to Brazil in few days has nothing to do with the crisis at hand, what has the religion and political leaders in the Northern region done about about this?.I believe if GEJ resigns now and a northerner steps in as a president this will be the end of Boko Haram.Does it mean that only one region was to have opportunity to be in power? This aim to distract GEJ from focusing on meaningful development.Security is a responsibility of everybody not only the president.Do we want GEJ to have a killer squad like the past presidents n heads of State?i believe the people responsible for this mayhem would have flee to other nations by now.Its therefore suggest to me that we dont want a quiet n a president that follows the rule of law.

  • Where are the other major world leaders at the time of this conference? At the G20 summit in Mexico dealing with the threat to global economy or in Brazil dealing with 'earth summit'? I heard that even the president of Brazil is at the G20 summit (perhaps because Brazil is part of the G20). But what is President Goodluck Jonathan, having the highest number of entourage, doing at an Earth Summit? Would sending a minister or two (or even the Vice President) diminish the level of our participation? In a sane society faced with the severe threat to its political stability the "Commander-in-Chief" will stay at home and lead his troops and send his VP to such a summit. But not in Nigeria! The President must attend this summit otherwise the earth will stand still. But then, we are all 'truly Nigerians' - cowards who write and complain on the pages of print and online newspapers and do nothing more. A nation and her people deserve the leader that they get. Jonathan and the rest of our irresponsible leaders (including Mr Abati) please carry on. But remember that the judgment of God awaits us all.

Gennerals Buhari and IBB, Adamu Ciroma and Atiku Abubakar have vowed in broad day light that they will make Nigeria ungovernable, then nobody cough. Now that we are reaping harvest of their evil plot, some biased and short sighted people stupidly searching for who to smear the blame on. Woe to shameless brats.

  • Dear President Jonathan,
We queued for hours and in hunger and voted you as president only for you to be paying us back this way. For over 72hours, sleeping with one eyes opened and your foot shouldiers telling us you can rule Nigeria from anywhere. Let Reuben Abati, Labaran Maku and co come and stay like other citizens in Barnawa, Kawo, Kujama and other suburbs of Kaduna for 24hrs to know what is going on.
I am presently housing 3 different disjointed families as refugees and no security guarantee, yet your aids are deceiving you and insulting our intelligence.
You are insensitive to abandon us for Brazil, when you can easily delegate some people to represent you. The world leaders are laughing at you instead of listening to you. Argentina President left the same meeting in Rio just because Truckers are protesting immediately and you remain.
I am short of words and not a politician, stop reading meanings and take candid advices.
In a civilised world, Abati and Maku should resign immediately, and Nigerians deserve unreserved apologies on your arrival.

  • The security challenge in this country is not likely to abate so long as a section of this country sees leadership as its birthright. The state governors are supposed to be the chief security officers of their states. It thus beats my imagination when critics heap blames on Mr President for every security lapse experienced in these states. Are Nigerians losing their sense of judgment? What difference would it make anyway, if GEJ had bowed to the wishes of Bokoharam and stayed back? What we require now is a collective will to fight the many ills that have pulled us several years back as a nation.

  • I write here with due respect to GEJ, my president.....

    Dear sir,

If i am given the opportunity to see you one on one, my advice to you is to set up a secret body (personal) that will gather information from the general masses on how they feel about your government. This will help you in getting the right inputs you need to achieve a strategic plan to deal with various issues affecting Nigerians.Your so called Abati and Maku are just bunch of sycophants who are just deceiving you to gain favor from you Mr. President..

    I will like to say that the trip you embarked on to Rio was not necessary based on the following reasons;
..The summit organisers would not have missed your absence
...Without the existence on Nigeria, you would not have made the trip
...You can only apply what you have benefited if the nation is peaceful..
Finally Mr. President, i urge you to be more proactive on national issues so that we can start seeing that you are the Goodluck to Nigeria indeed.....God Blees Nigeria

The opposition are all out to play politics with every issue which is sad. This is the time for opposition to stand by the presidency and confront this national threat. We should learn from the Americans, there was no Democrats nor Republican...everyone stood by the government to end the terrorism, none of them played politics with their national security. That's what opposition should be doing at this time...join hands with the president to defeat boko haram and leave politics till 2015.

Do you now see why we are described as the 3rd world or developing country? Because we cant manage ourselves and our expectations. This is like throwing your toys out of the pram. Mr. President, you want to seek the help or sympathy of the West and give them the impression that you are one their allies, but wake up and know what leadership is all about. • I Think Okon, Jimmy and Co above have gotten everything about this story wrong!.The President has no business flying out of the Country when so many innocent lives have been lost in the Country, it is insensitive, wrong and very unpatriotric from the President!. As I write this, the President of I believe Argentina cut her visit short from the same conference to return home just because of a strike in her country, no one lost his or her life but this courageous President found it more sensible to return home. This is a gesture from someone who takes her responsibilities seriously, who knows what leadership is all about and not partying, the is is the kind of President I want and dream for my Country, not what Jonathan has been dishing out so far. For the President to be Rio at this time is a waste of tax payers money!. A minister could have been delegated to go in a worst case scenario. The President only goes on these trips to spend our money with all the entourage that are always running around him like headless chickens. The President has so far made some of us realise what his priorities are. It is all too easy to say the opposition like to score cheap political points but he keeps exposing himself and it is right for them to take him on for the numerous lapses in judgement. As for the claim technological advancement, this is the most stupid excuse I have ever heardd. I want my President to be one that is touch with most common citizen on the land and not hide behind technology....God Help us!!!
