There has been a jailbreak at the Sagamu Prisons in Ogun State where at least 20 inmates were reported to have escaped through a large hole they bored on the fence of the facility after seizing weapons and stunning prison officials to effect their escape.
Thisday gathered that to effect the violent revolt, prisoners used different materials that included missiles as well as weapons.
They were, however, contained by the members of the Armed Squad of the Prison Service who were initially taken by surprise.
It was also gathered that one of the run-away prisoners had returned voluntarily to the prison yard while another was said to have surrendered himself to the police.
However, during the jailbreak which occurred around 3.00am, some of the inmates as well as prison officials were seriously injured in the melee.
The number of casualties could not be ascertained at press time but sources who pleaded not to be named told our correspondent that it was not unlikely that some of the prisoners might have been killed during the incident because of the heavy gunfire that boomed from inside the prison while the violence lasted.
Thisday also gathered that some of the prison officials were already being interrogated by the police over the jailbreak at the facility located on Prisons Street, Isale-Oko, Sagamu.
However, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Mr. Zakari Ohinoyi Ibrahim confirmed the jailbreak at the facility during an inspection of the Sagamu Prison on Friday.
Ibrahim told newsmen who were not allowed into the prison yard after about one-hour inspection of the damage done to the facility that four of the runaway prisoners had been re-arrested and brought back to the prison.
