Insecurity: Group Cautions Against Inflammatory Statements

A non-governmental organization, Global Initiatives for Peace, Protection and Equity has urged politicians and other prominent leaders in the country to desist from making inciting comments and  insinuations that is capable of generating hatred amongst the people.

The organization’s  Director General, Prince Barth Obi who spoke to journalists yesterday in Abuja on the outcome of the group’s nationwide peace tour, lamented the negative impact of the security crisis which has considerably slowed down develop,dental progress.

He said their experience at the end of the tour showed that ordinary Nigerians in the rural communities are
desirous of living together as one country but that a few leaders are trying to subvert their aspiration  for own selfish interest.
“We affirm that it is the fundamental right of all Nigerians to protest against any form of injustice but going to the extreme of such agitation and adopting violence option to the extent of destroying lives and properties is unacceptable and unpatriotic.
Obi expressed worry at the statement attributed to the former Governor of Yobe state, Senstor Bukar  Ibrahim that  security crisis might worsen due to his perceived shortcoming of the Federal Government’s budget proposal.

He said  as Nigerians, irrespective of our ethnic, political, business, individual interests and affiliations, we must rise to defend our nation from deliberate and calculated actions of detractors who are mobilizing themselves and their resource to truncate the peace, unit and stability of the country.

“Some of the northern leaders are not helping matters with regard to the insecurity in the country.  They are in the habit making inciting statements and false allegations capable of provoking hatred and violent conflict,” he said.
While  describing the former Governor’s outburst as unwarranted, Obi  advised politicians  to learn  not to play politics with the issue  of insecurity and terror insurgency in the country.

Obi said there is no denying the fact that government effort is gradually yielding fruits and that peace is being restored in many parts of the country.

He therefore solicited the cooperation of every Nigerian to give President Goodluck Jonathan support so that he ca be able to successfully implementation the transformation agenda.

However advised President Jonathan to evaluate the performance of his ministers  and other top government functionaries to ensure that those who are not doing the right thing are shown the way  out.
