IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja applied local knowledge to beat Kaduna Golf Club 1921 in the first inter-club matchplay since 2001held between the two sides over the weekend.

Abuja won the matches played over two days by a cumulative scores of 42- 18.

IBB Club led by Tony Azogu surged into a comfortable 17 ½ -3½ lead in the doubles played on day one of the series.

After Abuja took four of the opening matches, Kaduna waited until the twosome of O. Ajanaku and M. Richard halved with Gen Victor Lot and M. Edozien for its first point. The visitors won three of the last four doubles.

Though the tenor changed on Sunday, when Kaduna led by Arabi Bello, fought gallantly in the singles and lost by 24 ½ –17 ½, it proved a little too late as IBB coasted to a 42-18 victory.

Either side presented 42 players for the two- day matchplay.

Some of the notable individuals who featured in the matches include Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, Hon Tam Brisibe and Mrs Grace Ihonvbere for Abuja, while Kaduna had Sunday Ehindero, Austin Oniwon and Femi Okeowo.

Despite their huge loss, Arabi with his tongue in cheek, described Kaduna Club 1921 as the Nigeria’s ‘University of Golf’ from where some of the current Abuja top amateur golfers learned the game.

Kaduna is expected to fix a date for the reverse fixtures.
