Deputy Managing Director of Cotecna Destination Inspection Limited, Mr. Ernest Woka
The House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise has charged contractors handling different projects for the Nigerian Customs service (NIS) in the country to redouble their effort.
The committee, received by the Deputy Managing Director of Cotecna Destination Inspection Limited, Mr. Ernest Woka, who is handling the projects at Jibia International border in Katsina State and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Kano, charged the customs officials to perform their duties without fear or favour.
At Jibia international border in Katsina state, the Deputy Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kingsley Ogundu, explained that the visit was to ensure that the contractor handling the projects executed them accordingly.
“We are on this oversight function to see by ourselves and also to know firsthand the challenges faced by the Nigerian Custom Service officials and also to ensure that Nigerians get quality services from the contractors”.
The House committee also visited the vehicle scanner centre at the International Border in Jibia and expressed satisfaction with contractor commitment over the quality of job done.
Ogundu also urged the contractor to improve on some areas at the Jibia international border and assured listeners that the extension of their contract to six months after seven years agreement will help government in some areas that need improvement of the projects.
Also when leading the committee, Woka showed the members round the mobile scanner machine for scanning trucks and cars into the country through the border. He stated that the scanner was installed in 2010 and was capable of scanning over 200 trucks and cars daily, while he assured the committee members that the installed scanners are of international standard.
In his response, the Assistant Comptroller of General of Nigeria Custom Service (ACG) Zonal Coordinator Zone B; Mr. Ofem E.A, expressed gratitude to the committee over the visit to the border.
Ofem assured the team that the Customs service would not relent in their duties, while he charged the personnel to redouble their effort without fear in their duties, stating that hard work is the most important in the service.
