Dr. Bashir Gwandu

At last, the man fell. He should have fallen like yesterday. No man sows the wind and will not reap the whirlwind. But for a while, a long while, it seemed Dr Bashir Gwandu was exempted from this natural law. He was (yes, was) the Executive Director in charge of the Engineering and Technology Standards in the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC).

Driven by his vaunted ambition to be named the Executive Vice Chairman of the commission, Gwandu had taken on the leadership of the commission without demur.  He had wanted to succeed Ernest Ndukwe, especially when he was made the acting EVC. He was pretty certain he was going to be made the substantive boss. But the board had a different thought. Eventually, Mr Eugene Juwah, and not him was made the EVC. That made him unsheathe his sword of offence. He literally became uncrontrollable, firing accusations, founded and unfounded, at the management of the NCC, hoping to cause sufficient disaffection that could sweep off Juwah, so he can fit in. But his plans failed to fly. He carried on with some streak of strange confidence of an “ untouchable”, because of so-called royal father’s backing. And for a long time, he had his way, albeit worrisomely.

Even when the Board clarified the sale of 450 MHZ band to OpenSkys Ltd, Gwandu continued to scream blue murder. But his allegations could not be proven, little wonder that the reason for his sack, last Tuesday was gross insubordination. At least, the point has been made that the public service is not exactly a platform for undue rascality, recklessness and executive refractory, whether the person be a prince or a pauper.
