Unknown gunmen Monday  kidnapped the wife of the Rivers State Correspondent of the Vanguard Newspapers, Mr. Jimitota Onoyume, in Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

THISDAY gathered that Onoyume’s wife, Mirian, was about driving out of her husband’s residence in Eku, with their two children when the hoodlums, numbering four blocked the vehicle she was driving and forced her to drive to an unknown destination, after pointing a gun at her.

She was said to be taking the children to school when she was abducted by the gunmen. The two children, THISDAY also learnt, were pulled out of the vehicle by the hoodlums, before taking their mother away.

In a text message to THISDAY Monday, Onoyume confirmed the incident and appealed for assistance from security agencies and the public for the safe return of his wife.

Onoyume said in the text message, “I am Mr. Jimitota Onoyume, the Rivers State Correspondent of the Vanguard Newspaper. I got a call now that my wife, Mrs Marian Onoyume, was kidnapped minutes ago at our residence in Eku, Ethiope East local government area, Delta State while she was about driving out.

“The kidnappers were four men and armed. They drove towards Salubi area. Kindly help please. Details of the vehicle, Nissan quest, chassis number; 4N2DN11W4RD829149, Engine number: VQ992501A, plate number: EF 988 Benin.”

Onoyume also disclosed that the abductors had contacted him through his daughter’s phone that was in the vehicle when Marian was kidnapped.

Reacting to the incident, the Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) condemned the abduction of the wife of one of its members.
The state NUJ Chairman, Opaka Dokubo, in a statement in Port Harcourt noted that of recent, journalists in Nigeria and their families had become targets of armed robbery attacks, kidnappings and assassinations.

He deplored the security situation in the country and expressed dismay that there was no improvement on security despite the huge sums of money voted to that sector.

The union called for the immediate safe and unconditional release of Onoyume’s wife and appealed to security agencies to do all they can to ensure that she is rescued unhurt as well as ensure the arrest of the kidnappers.
