Late  Cynthia Udoka Osokogu

By Chiemelie Ezeobi

At last, the anxiety of retired Major General Frank Osokogu and his wife, Joy, over the disappearance of their 24-year-old daughter, Cynthia Udoka Osokogu, is over. But while the anxiety over her whereabouts has been addressed, it has just compounded their agony.

While they were fretting over her whereabouts, after she had left her base in Nasarawa State for Lagos to shop for her boutique called Dress Code, they never knew that her body was lying in a Lagos mortuary. Their sorrow increased last Saturday when the Lagos Police Command identified her body as that of the person that her family had declared missing since July 22.

Sources said the late Cynthia, after leaving Nasarawa State, was welcomed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos by some unknown persons. From the airport, she was lodged in a hotel in FESTAC Town and her trail petered out.

Attempts by her family members and concerned friends to ascertain her whereabouts proved abortive, thereby prompting them to circulate messages on the social media network announcing her disappearance.

None of her family members thought that she could have been dead, as they just thought she missed her way or something less fatal had happened to her.

According to reports, the deceased who until her death was running a postgraduate programme in Public Administration at the Nasarawa State University, was lured to Lagos by a group of men whose stock-in-trade is to lure young girls and kill them after dispossessing them of their belongings.

Born on November 10, 1987, Cynthia was killed three months away from her 25th birthday. Sources close to the family said she was the last born and only daughter of her parents and because of her vantage position in the family, everybody doted on her.

THISDAY learnt that the deceased before her death, had been chatting with some new friends on Facebook for a few months, not knowing that her newfound friends had other plans on their minds beyond mere friendship. On realising that she was a frequent visit to Lagos, her new friends, described as two young men, were said to have promised to host her on her next trip.

They were said to have paid for her flight ticket as well as her hotel fee and based on the level of trust she had developed for them, she went along with the plan without knowing that they had sinister motives.

After picking her from the airport, they drove her to a hotel in FESTAC Town where she was lodged. As part of their sinister plot, they had recruited a member of staff of the hotel and a pharmacist who produced a toxic substance used to drug her.

The deceased was tied up and eventually robbed of all the money she brought to shop for her business and then strangled to death. Her assailants dispossessed her of her phone, her identity card and other things that could be used to identify her.

Her details in the hotel were scanty, apparently to throw off the police and hotel management, as they would think she was a call girl who died in service.

The hotel management which had no way of  identifying her were said to have reported the incident to the police and subsequently, her body was deposited at the mortuary.

However, nemesis caught up with her killers after they had thought they had got away with the crime when one of them mistakenly answered her phone. The call was traced to FESTAC and based on that, her family submitted a missing person’s report to the Area E Command in FESTAC which used that to trace her body to the mortuary.

THISDAY gathered that the Lagos State Police Command immediately commenced investigations and six persons were arrested by Tuesday.

It was also gathered from reliable sources that arrests were made when the policemen upon interrogating some employees at the hotel, discovered the CCTV footage of the suspects when they came into the hotel with the deceased.
Two of the suspects who are university students have confessed that they killed her, adding that she was their sixth victim. According to them, they specialised in luring unsuspecting young women to  rob them of their possessions before killing them.

During their confession, they disclosed that after committing the crime, they had left the hotel and deleted her from their Facebook friends’ list to remove any trace of their connection to her.

Armed with their confessions and the CCTV footage, the police made additional arrests of the pharmacist and a member of the hotel staff.

A police source said  the culprits belong to a syndicate that specialised in luring young women to Lagos for the purpose of business only to kill them.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident but refused to give details, adding that the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, would brief the press on the matter today.

In a tribute to the deceased posted on the internet, her best friend, one Aishatu Ene Ella, said: “In the last few days, my heart has been torn, stripped and broken in pieces first by the disappearance and death of my dearest friend and secondly by the wickedness exhibited by Nigerians, passing judgment on someone they never knew or met.”

She described the late Cynthia as a model and businesswoman who at the age of 24 was already making money independently even though her parents could take care of her needs. After making three times her capital on her first sales, she was said to have immediately re-invested and got a flagship shop at Keffi, the capital city of Nasarawa State, at the age of 21.

“The Cynthia we all knew always put people first before herself. Anytime I had a charity project to execute, I always called her because I know she would champion it.

“To her mother, Cynthia was her heart. When it was time to serve in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), while others would work their service to areas full of opportunities like Abuja, Lagos and Port Hacourt, Cynthia worked her service to crisis-ridden Jos to be close to her mother,” her friend said.

  • Wicked world! This is sad;a pure satanic act. May Cynthia's soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of GOD rest in peace, amen. May Almighty God,the maker of heaven and earth console her family and give them the fortitude to forge ahead in this painful moment, amen.
The Bible encourages us to be on the alert and watch always as the devil-the enemy is always prowling like a lion looking for someone to devour...Social media users please be very careful;shine your eyes well well. Internet has been revealed to be one of the media Satan and its agents use to get at the people.

  • Money is not everything! Parents shouldn't allow their female children begin to hunt for money so early in life, imagine at the age of 21,a young girl of her age should have been more concerned on how to achieve academic prowess and get a good job and get married. Its unfortunate, it is the eagerness to transact business and probably get some fun from unknown friends that motivated her journey to Lagos, why didnt she tell her parents or friends of the trip if she hadn't immoral or material motive behind the journey. I am not passing judgement on the dead but parents should learn from this. Most girls of this days are too much in a hurry to make money and compete with the men. Life is expensive and should be lived gently. Quest for materialism, the bane of Nigerian girls. What profit has she made now...UNFORTUNATE generation. Anyway may her soul rest in peace. Other fun-seekers and material girls should take note.

  • At the time the hotel manage called in the police that a girl was murder in their hotel, why didn't the police make use of the CCTV footage immediately to get the so call suspects - or has the police given license to people to kill call girls. In anyway the police and the hotel has alot to tell the public. We will use social media to bring this hotel down if we don't get answers immediately.

  • The parent are partly to be blame. they should not have encourage her to go into business at that tender age. secondly why couldn't she pay for her air freight and hotel since she came for business. why wait for the men to pay for her, Nigerian girls are known for easy money even with the money stored in the bank.
Nigerian Police are so stupid, so because they though she is a call girl and therefore there is no need to investigate the death not until it turned out to be the daughter of a General. this country is so fucked

  • Overly trusting public should by this very sad occurrence learn not to take friendship on social networks seriously unless you are Delong with someone you knew personally. Come to think of it, the person you claim you know personally also deserves to be suspected. Carefulness and security consciousness should be our watchword.

  • Though sad about her plight, i still believe she lived and grew up so fast and it was for the same reasons that she died so young. Therefore, the moral of this story is that young girls should jettison the all time high get-rich-quick syndrome a.k.a. runs.

  • sad, very sad, my heart goes out the poor parents of the girl, losing a child is enough pain, losing one in such a circumstance is heart wrenching, what are the lessons learnt? it is so difficult to trust people nowadays, that is why i find it difficult to even offer a ride to a stranger going my way because you just dont know what his intention is, two, one must ALWAYS allow at least one person to know his/her movement, if she had informed her close friend and sent a text immediately she got to lagos and the hotel giving the names and phone nos of his "friends", it would have been quite easy to trace the murderers, three, be careful about meeting people you meet on social network sites, some have been lucky, but a lot have been duped and killed like in this lady's case, dont accept friend requests from people you dont know and if and when you do, keep the friendship where it belongs, ON FACEBOOK alone. May she find forgiveness and peace with our maker!

  • For Christ's sake, what is this country turning to? We are talking of a young innocent girl being murdered for no other offence than she had money to be stolen. Our security agencies should as a matter of urgency beam their attention on our undergraduates. Many of them in these cult societies have become beasts. Killing innocent persons, mostly female students means nothing, absolutely nothing to them. Some of these boys come from so-called 'influential' families. they engage in armed robbery, rape, kidnapping just name any heinous vices that would make a normal person shiver. I bet you they will be free in a few days from now. Our police, mostly the rank and file, deligently carry out criminal investigations, but their corrupt, politicised bosses would sabotage their efforts. Before we know it, these satanic boys would be out in the streets hunting for other victims. My heart goes to her parents and siblings. It is a very unfortunate tragedy.

  • Even call girls are human beings who could turn out to become better and responsible fellows later in their lives by the mercies of God. So the police shldn't have ignored such that requires immediate investigation. Also to young girls who want to make money by all course irrespective of the riisk involved shold take precaution. God's time is the best. Meanwhile may her gentle soul rest in perfect peace.

  • Facebook international. Are u on Facebook, yes, and that's it . Other countries use Facebook to make good friends, but Nigerians use it to ambush pretty gals. Facebook is the official Olofofo site for Nigerian Gals. If not that Cynthia is now dead, I would have said good for her. How can u come to Lagos to see somebody u don't know too well and not related to u in the first place. Runns. Will other Ugly girls learn from this, can they also verify whom they meet on Facebook before seeing them.

  • What the heck am I reading from some of these commentators. It is so stupid and irrational to blame the girl for her fate. These writers are not different from the wicked murderers. Why can't she be independent? Why can't a woman aspire to the same goal as a man?. I believe that she has already completed her bachelors degree, why are these people writing that she should have concentrated in her education. For Christ's sake, we need to grow up. I came to USA at the age of 22 years old and immediately started working. I had a female friend who came to this country a year before me and she was only 19 years old and was fully employed. We are in the global age in which we have to exchange information, culture and the way we live. Nigerians only inculculate the lazy aspects of this global age. Many grown-up's are still living in their parents house and still depending on them for their daily needs. Instead of working towards an independent life style, they continue to lean towards their parents. Most students in USA are employed and rarely depend on their parents. They get student loans and will pay it back at the end of their education. Why a hard working girl is being lambasted and destroyed just because she was industrious is mind boggling. It is the inability of students to seek self employment that has contributed immensely to cultisim. Laziness leads to anti-social behaviors. Instead of condemning these atrocities, people are blaming the girl. This is absurd. On the other hand, who has knowledge that they will die today. Nobody has the answer. You can place yourself in the most secured confines in your house and still die or be killed. People who were sitting in their houses were killed by the DANA plane. How secure can that be?. You can make plans and do everything right and still die. I believe this young lady did her best to be safe but she was unfortunate to die in the hands of these wicked morons. Please my fellow commentators we do not know our destiny with regards to when we will die. So please do not blame the girl. Her hands and soul are clean. We only live in a wicked world.

  • This is a most harrowing experience. It's like waking up from a long nightmare. One feels very devastated that some young men will delight in the fiendish mutilation of our collective psych. The deification of materialism has made our youth deadly dangerous. Why destroy the life you did not create. That University undergraduates are said to be behind this dastardly act is most dolorous. As students they ought to know that no pleasure flows from any impish act. Every Author writes either from his existential experience or that of others as none creates in a vacuum. Macbeth it was who betrayed Duncan who had honoured him with a royal visit, but he discovered to his chagrin that the booties that flowed from the decimation of Duncan could only be appropriated in a cosmos where there had been no infraction of the moral platform upon which it was based. These young men are a shame to humanity. They need to be cauterized.
