Juan Martin Del Potro progressed to the next round
Ninth seed Juan Martin Del Potro overcame an injury scare to beat the unseeded Albert Montanes of Spain 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-1 at the French Open, reports the BBC.
Del Potro required medical attention on his left knee after losing the second set, his opponent fighting back from 5-1 down in the tie-break to level.
The 23-year-old Argentine looked in discomfort during the third but he regrouped to progress to round two.
The 2009 US Open winner will next play France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
Del Potro started brightly, hitting 13 winners in taking a one-set lead.
But clay-court specialist Montanes recovered from a 4-2 deficit in the second, producing some deft shots on Court Phillipe Chatrier.
Del Potro, a semi-finalist in 2009, needed heavy strapping on his left knee before embarking on the third set.
Although the powerful right-hander initially looked uncomfortable, he made quick work of completing a hard-fought victory.
Elsewhere, 18th seed Stanislas Wawrinka survived a big scare to beat unseeded Italian Flavio Cipolla 6-3 6-3 4-6 3-6 6-2.
Number 21 seed Marin Cilic began his campaign with a 6-4 6-4 7-5 win against Daniel Munoz-De La Nava of Spain.
