UNIPORT Students Lynched

By Ernest Chinwo

Four male undergraduate students of the University of the Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) were killed last Friday by a mob in Umuokiri community, Aluu, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, on allegations of armed robbery.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to journalists said the boys were arrested about 5am by a team of vigilantes who alleged that the suspects were armed with axes and knives. The witness gave the names of the victims as Ugonna, Lloyd, Tamunotekena and Chidiaka. They were alleged to have stolen blackberry phones and laptops in the community where they were staying in an off-campus hostel.

Although there was no official report of any robbery incident in the area, the witnesses said the vigilantes claimed the boys were picked up because they acted suspiciously.

Meanwhile, some students of UNIPORT have expressed outrage over the lynching of their colleagues. They said the suspects should have been handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution.

The spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Ben Ugwuegbulam, confirmed the incident and said that an attempt by the police to rescue the suspects proved abortive. He said investigation would be carried out on the matter.

However, Toku Mike, the father of one of the victims, Lloyd Toku, has denied that his son was an armed robber. Mike, a broadcaster with Radio Rivers, said his son was a decent young man. He called on the police to investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to book.

Also lamenting the incident, Ann Elkanah, a sister to one of the victims, Tamunotekena, said the family wanted justice for the killing of her only brother. She said Tamuno was innocent of the allegations levelled against him.

  • Well a big pity, from the story they are not armed with fire arms. Moreso, vigilantes by the constitution of FG does not have the right for such action. My problems here is that is their no police station in that area? Innocent people can be victims.
However, what they were doing with axes

  • This is the height of barbarism. How can a persons life be terminated just for the theft of material things such as laptops and mobile phones that can be easily replaced. Guilty or not the punishment far outweighs the crime and is an indictment of every one who participated as being less than Human. Nigerians, this is the 21st century and you really need to start using the brains that God gave you to reason like human beings. I weep for my country!

  • This is unfortunate! The level of lawlessness in my country perplexes me. But more shocking is the shameful fact that the police are always caught flat-footed. Who would ever help the families concerned to bear the psychological injuries they would surely encure due to this gruelsome and barbaric act? The same vigilante group that out-muscled the bicepts of the police are the same they would turn around to investigate. In peroration, nothing should be expected out of this so-called investigation. If God ever judged us this way, we would certainly have been living in the silent limbo of the past.

  • May there Soul Rest In Peace, nobody has the right to kill another, where were the community leaders, chiefs when these boys where arrested, why didn't the head of the vigilante handed them over to the police, why didn't the police rescue these boys, these shows the level of insecurity, may God help us, but for those that killed these boys, know that where ever you go, you will be hunted out physically or spiritually.

  • The Parents of this kids should be ashamed of themselves. This boys are all Cultists and going thru their facebook page will tell you more. The 4 boys belong to the "mafia" cult which is one of the many cults in uniport. Now that they have been brutally murdered they are all claiming that their kids are innocent and all what not. This should serve as a lesson to Parents as well as would be cultists The university is for learning and not for cultism or gang related activities. These same cultists are the ones that will be elected for political offices in the future, we have already seen their types in our current political dispensation. We should all say no to cultism in all our schools, many students have been maimed, robbed, raped and killed by this cultists in many of our higher institutions. They lived by the sword and met a brutal end. The community that killed them had no choice since handing them to the Police would have been as good as releasing them. Parents train your child with good morals and be watchful, many parents now leave their kids to be "trained" by drivers, househelps and relatives.

  • well, the frustration and poverty in nigeria has made 85 of Nigerians act and behave like sheep without shepherd. This is d most unlawful and unenlightened nation in the whole world , a nation that most people don't even know what government is, how government functions and why there is a government , the earlier we have an insight on tjhis people will understand that there is policing, there r laws governing a land, one is answerable to every single descision made and once u fault the law will be strongly on u.
Haven said that, we will repeat our selves over and over on taking laws into our hands. A country of anyhow, where everyone me n u acts anyhow in all framifications. Is there any sin or crime that those boys committed that a Court of Law cant deal with . If I had your bb pin or smthn would forward you what dehumanising things some onitsha traders did to a gal that stole a blackberry. The frustration is so much on us Nigerians that we vent all the anger n contempt on every thing that comes our way. It is indeed sad that we will speak the whole English on our lips and this will end up just like every others we have heard . For them that say that is a humane act, may them and their children reap every single sin that they have sinned and will sin . AMEN. God help us !

  • I have never done this before but right now I am speechless and drowning in tears. This is a video footage I just received from a friend via bbm... Obviously it is making the rounds on bbm and on the internet... http://tinyurl.com/9ttsmxg ...this is the link to the senseless torture and murder of 4 young men...I am still in tears and cannot go any further watching this video... No matter the offense we all deserve a chance in life.... JUSTICE has to prevail... Why this senseless waste of human lives for 'SUPPOSEDLY' stealing a laptop and phone. Why?... It is not enough that they have been beaten to a pulp and unconsciousness, but they are burnt alive...OMG I can't stop the tears. Why has my country deteriorated to this level that human lives is as good as nothing... Even a goat or a chicken gets better treatment. I do not know any of these young men but I know they had dreams, they had families, dads, mums n siblings and I can imagine what they are going through right now. This is a really unfair world where billions are stolen and nobody raises an eyebrow, people are gunned down daily on the streets and even in their homes and yet the culprits walk free on the road, and these arm less young men are used as scape goats in a very disgusting manner, how can a human being do this to another?... So many stories have gone round about what happened but I still maintain that these young men are too smart to go out with the intention to rob in broad daylight and of all things, a phone and laptop... There is more to it than meets the eye and I plead for this not to be swept under the carpets. I wonder whatever happened to being our brother's keepers, people had the time to take pictures and video footages but no one thought to call the police or anything to save these lives.
The blood of these young men will cry out for justice and revenge for the perpetrators, who by doing this have committed a crime greater than what they accused these young men of doing, yet nobody has hung them or burnt them, ah the stupidity of man, what justifies their actions now ... those who had the time to stand around to take pictures and video footages without using these same phones to alert authorities...and those in authority who would see this case and turn a blind eye. This is a terrible terrible way to die..they all had dreams and let him who is innocent cast the first stone. Even if they did steal, we have all had our own juvenile tendencies, some of the perpetrators and those standing around have done worse things, how much more a phone and laptop. LET JUSTICE BE METED OUT!!!!!. If a person gets instant justice, is tortured and burnt because he is accused of stealing a phone and laptop, I wonder what sort of punishment is given to someone who kills and burns a fellow human being. It beats me. Such a world we live in.... May their souls rest in peace and God grant their families the comfort to bear these terrible loss.

  • Omg . I strongly believed that the vigilante are trying to act upon something. Why killing them this way. If they were alive and investigated they have a lot to lose. I felt they have been framed up by vigilant members. Is the community does not have a leader.? Is there time for them to say what happened.? They are not with guns..., no axes with them at point of killing, no blackberry or laptop. For justice to take place the vigilante members should be killed as they killed these student by the police . I don't support crime but it could be anybody or your son or brother. It is a pity.

  • Even if these boys were guilty of stealing, the community vigilante has no right, no locus standi in law to conduct a trial, prosecute, judge and execute them. It is wrong within all ramifications. The action of the community vigilante is more disturbing because honestly, people should not take the laws into there hands without recourse to law enforcement no matter the level of provocation. If we all take laws into our hands it will be a situation of anarchy and chaos from our villages to Abuja.
Clearly, two wrongs will never make a right - whereas the allegation of stealing was the issue, again and again the community was haste in decision and acted in great error. Yes these young men are dead but the executioners are not. The should as a matter of urgency be brought to book. It is pathetic because these are other people's sons, brothers, cousins, relative...it simply can happen to any young person including those of the community vigilante. In the same vein, young men should be extremely careful in these days of criminal acts being done by other young men. Yes...our ego is greatest problem. We should as a matter of fact be careful of association - na my man, guy escort me here, nwanee do this for me, guy make we run things, guy you dey slack - you be jew man, join me make we go, guy nothing they happen...because something fit happen after all !!!

  • Please guys, didn't you see how some students where brutally massacred at UNIPORT yesterday afternoon claiming they stole laptop and cellphones.... They were beaten to death, beaten as if all of us are not humans... OMG they were beaten like (can't say)... God himself can't punish humans like that not to talk of the devil..... They were brutally beaten.... And people stood around there and they were looking instead of them to call the attention of the police... Those students where not only beaten by some heartless fellow but later burnt to ashes..... I know thieves are not to be spared nor to be killed but to deal with them accordinly cos if you spare them, they will continue doing bad and if you also kill them, their blood would be on the killers and those who stood there watching head....
I am pleading with all the student, lecturers and universities all over Nigeria to please talk on this issue and take neccessary actions and bring those bad Nigerians to justice... The Gov. Of Rivers, please do something.. Make sure you get those people, Gov. Fashola, please do something most especially our presido.. Don't seat down there and command your army to go and find them. The president himself should attend to this matter with fierce and justice..... Original armed robbers are not been battard like this oooo... What a pity, after you'll say Boko haram is wicked... Boko haram sef kind cos they don't kill like this mehnnn..... Please most especially students.... Try and help yourselves no matter what happens... You don't know where you might jamm in the future.... May God help Us.... (Amen)

  • EMEKA, well said... In addition though, my question is 'why do we have to b told jungle justice is wrong?' I feel so ashamed, I am speechless. The amazing thing is that we have not seen anyone step forward and say their stuff was what was stolen! This ease of unashamedly killing and burning people who are still alive in a country that claims to be very religious proves that the white folks that chunk out data of our amoral society would be very correct about our despicable nature and foolishness of a so called great country. Our country is very bad... The culture of jungle justice is typical of a group of people that cannot say they know or worship God. Today I believe that the god that a lot of people claim to worship in Nigeria is not the same as the God in the bible... God please help... Even poverty can't explain this behavior from any group of people .

For goodness sake it is only in this part of the world that police make this kind of comment and go scot-free. • This is the highest form of depravity, and further evidence of the failed state that Nigeria is. The only reason the Vigilante group thrives is the Police cannot perform their role to the society, and how can they? You probably have more of them guarding the big men as "mai guards" or driving the wifes of the Ogas, or providing security to the looters of the economy, the real criminals as the whiz around in their landrover sports.
That these four had to die such shameful death is saddening. I don't know what the parents, classmates and friends of these victims of our collective failure would be going through. These are young men, who admittedly may be rascible, but one would imagine, not redeemable. That their parents did not loot to send them abroad or even to Ghana for higher education may be their principal crime. What a shame!

  • Dear follow Nigeria,
You should be wise to void the same action, because it could you next or one family member or your relation because such action taken by extraordinary vigilantes team in the common community is not accepted by me, because President Jonathan is not doing well, and our Policemen and woman are weak in their duties by allowing common idiots of vigilantes time to kill people just that the guy's were stealing common phones and laptop without no evident to prove of they wrongdoing, please i personally ordering the weak President of Nigeria called Mr. J. E. Goodluck to inform the weak IGP of Nigeria Police to immediate arrest all those idiot of vigilantes teams and other security teams which witness the sense of the incident and sentence them to life imprisonment for all.
Whatsoever please justice must bring to book for those guy's because they don't deserved a shameful death just because a common phone, this is a planned killing.
I am immediately calling the people of those guy's that were killed to make a massive arrest of those unauthorized idiots vigilantes team, please Ann Elkanah and Toku Mike, you people shouldn't accept any weak action by the police to investigate the matter, because life cannot be replace but i wish our nonsense federal government can purely ordered the arrest of those vigilantes and whosoever that behind the reregistration as an vigilantes, this is a pure planned killing specially Ms. Ann Elkanah's only brother, when looking it, you shall reason to know that someone bought them, i mean the idiot vigilantes team to kill those future guy's by alleged that they steal a phone and laptop, why can't the vigilantes to send the guys to nearest Police, than stone them to death and put them on Tyre and burned them just like that. No i will never support those idiot vigilantes, included who ever that formed them, this is actually the same style of calamity that Bakasi boy's used to sent some innocent people to death without a prove of wrongdoing which they committed.
The same style that Our stupid and nonsense police man, killed a young man or shot him to death, who just wedded newly, its only after 4 to 5 days he wedded, now they leave the wife of the guy in other world. Why are Nigerian security team and Nigeria Police or Eke? Just by killing people like goat, and chicken?
