Nigerian players celebrate after beating Senegal in the last edition of the competition
The draws for the forthcoming WAFU Nations Cup, earlier scheduled to hold Thursday, has been shifted due to flight hitches occasioned by the political crisis in Cote d’Ivoire. In a release signed by the Secretary General of the Sub-Regional Football Governing body, Aka Malan, from the Secretariat of WAFU in Abidjan, it cited difficulties getting flight out of Abidjan for the reason for the shift in date. “Life in Abidjan is just returning to normal. I had earlier booked to arrive Lagos on Thursday morning but the airline has just informed us that the earliest the secretariat staff can get a flight to Lagos is on Sunday, April 24.
“I understand that Monday is public holiday because of the Easter celebration and Tuesday April 26 is the day for the Governorship Elections in Nigeria. I sincerely request the change in date but I think it is in the best interest of all concerned.”
The draws will now hold on Thursday April 28. Malan in the release further stated that, the Secretariat has informed all participating teams of the new date.
The event now scheduled to hold at The Richton Hotel in Abeokuta is expected to have in attendance the Interim Management Committee of WAFU headed by CAF Executive member; Kwesi Nyantakyi, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation led by Alhaji Aminu Maigari, ex-internationals and other members of the footballing family.
The WAFU Nations Cup is scheduled to take place from May 5 to 15 in Abeokuta and Ijebu-Ode. Nigeria beat Senegal in the final match to win the last edition.
