First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan

By Muhammed Bello

First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, who was flown out for medical treatment over a week ago, has undergone surgery in a German hospital for ruptured appendicitis, sources told THISDAY Monday.

The hospital, the source said, performed the surgery on her last week and she is now recuperating.

Although the presidency said she travelled abroad to rest, sources privy to her trip, said she was flown to the German hospital where she was diagnosed of ruptured appendicitis, necessitating the surgery.

Mrs. Jonathan was said to have been accompanied on the trip by a medical personnel from the Presidential Villa, and a few of her aides.

THISDAY gathered that the decision to fly her abroad followed her deteriorating health condition in Abuja, after she was initially treated for “food poisoning.”

It was learnt that Mrs. Jonathan, shortly after returning from a trip to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), took ill, prompting the invitation of the First Family’s medical personnel to attend to her.

She was said to have been treated for food poisoning for four days, “but her condition kept worsening by the day,” the source said.

By the fifth day, President Goodluck Jonathan was said to have yielded to the suggestion that she be flown abroad for “thorough treatment.”

It was not certain if the inability of the president’s doctors to treat her was because of faulty diagnosis or insufficient facilities.

According to the source, “the trip was therefore hurriedly, but discretely arranged, after a German hospital, suspected to be Horst Schmidt Klinik in Wiesbaden, Germany, had been contacted”.

By last weekend, she was said to have regained “full consciousness” on her sick bed and was willing to return home.

THISDAY checks, however, revealed that the hospital authorities are insisting on her full recovery before discharging her.

“They say she has to be completely stable before she can be discharged, because they are still observing her, although the worst seems to be over now,” the source said.

When contacted, Special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said he was unaware of the first lady’s condition.

Similar efforts made to reach the first lady’s spokesman, Mr. Ayo Osinlu, were unsuccessful as he did not pick calls to his phone nor respond to text messages sent to him.

But an online forum had quoted him as saying the president’s wife travelled abroad for a “moment’s rest”.

  • Why are the Presidential Aides telling lies about the 1st Lady's health condition. For God's sake she is human and therefore capable of falling sick so why all the lies about her health condition. The implication of this denial by the presidential spokesperson is that the guy is now a celebrated lier and therefore should never be trusted any time and when ever he speaks on National issues.

  • I wish her a quick recovery. This is a big shame that for ordinary ruptured appendicitis, she had to be flown abroad, this by implication is telling the whole world that the Government has failed in the area of health. Shame also to the medical personnel from the Presidential Villa who could not diagnose the ruptured appendicitis and were busy wasting their time and our resources treating her for food poisoning.
Some people need to be asked to go out of the villa to save our hard earned resources and most importantly to save people including our first lady from careless death. A whole four days endangering someone life.

  • I feel ashamed that in Nigeria today, our leaders go abroad for all manner of treatment. why cant we have the SCHON KLINIK(GERMANY) IN ENUGU, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL (FREIBURG) IN SOKOTO, CHARITE (GERMANY) IN LAGOS, UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS (for cancer) IN ABUJA, CLEVELAND CLINIC (for heart & cardiology) IN BAYELSA. These specialised hospitals spread all over this country. Of course Mrs president did not go alone, she went with her friends (to tel her MUMMY SORRY and all manner of prayers that do not go beyond their tongue), and office and domestic staff, who pays the bills?, do not be perturbed if you hear that Nigerian doctors in Germany are attending to the first lady. may God save this country.

  • So shameful. If the aso rock clinic, the presidencies hospital cannot be able to diagnose common appendicitis..the poor masses, definitely no place for them.Nigeria with our wealth,we cannot be able to equip our hospitals.Corruption until we say no to it,we will be free.If I were the first lady, i will prefer dying at the presidency than been flown abroad.
pls,the presidency, equip our hospitals..for the poor masses.it costs absolutely nothing for a nation like Nigeria with all its citizen working as doctors in western world using all this digital ,equipments.

  • Dont be deceived by these story. There's more that meets eyes. Whoever said the Doctors in Nigeria cannot diagnose ruptured appendicitis or surgery must be a very BIG LIAR. There are several Surgeons in Nigeria that I know can immediately under 30 minutes diagnose and sort this sort out e.g. First Consultants, Atlantic Medical Centre Limited, Eko Hospital, St. Maria Clinic Limited, St.Sophia Clinic, Comodern Medical Centre, St.Francis Clinic etc or better this link: http://www.lagosmart.net/lagos/MedicalConsultants.htm . Rubbish, I cannot subscribe to this irresponsible, insensitive and wasteful attitudes of our rulers with all their entourage. It's a shame that in the 21st Century when other leaders the world over are dying to cut public spending and invest in infrastractural developments we are busy globe-trotting and showing-off. Our inactions today will lead to ur impoverishment in the future and long-term if we continue to bring down our own thing or people and praise the FOREIGN ones. No wonder the British Govt are planning to sell their National Health Service to us as a Health provider. Omo Nigeria, E loo ro inu yin gan ni ooo (Nigerians should think deeply.)

  • A condition that is known to be the most common surgical presentation with 7% of the population! A surgery that will last 20-30minutes or less, cost a little over N50k (minimum), can be done with even local anesthetics/regional block! can be diagnosed by even a medical student! can be performed in any surgery practice as long as aseptic conditions are observed (it can even be done with lantern light at a village hospital!). patient discharged within three days (or even on same day!). shame on Nigeria and our health bureaucrats!

  • The quality of our medical practice comes to question. Treating food poisoning as opposed to ruptured appendicitis ......... except ofcourse we are dealing with official concocted release !
Many hapless Nigerians have died prematuredly due to wrong or defective diagnosis.
It is certainly a cause for concern.

  • While I wish the Nigerian First Lady a speedy recovery, it's a shame that successive leadership in Nigeria has not seen the need to build our infrastructure, including our healthcare system. Sure, the rich and powerful can afford to send their families abroad to take care of their health care needs, but what about those who cannot?

When I was growing in Nigeria, UCH, LUTH, UBTH, etc, were centers of medical excellence, but where are they now?

  • When will Nigeria grow beyond this mess? It is a shame that we have failed to learn from our close neighbors like Ghana. Gahanian president died in a Ghanian Hospital and the whole world was informed pronto and his deputy sworn in. Sick members of Nigeria's first to 3rd familly cannot be treated in Nigeria for simple malaria. Can you imagine? Ruptured Appendicitis that even local chemists treat perfectly is what our First Lady is being flown abroad for.

Don't this media aides no they portray the image of their bosses and this country. Telling lies don't mean good representation. I AM SAD!

  • The powers that be a great shame on you. The President hesitated flying his wife abroad because it would be a big indictment on his administration that Nigeria with all its wealth from oil and the Nigerian manpower that are utilized by foreign countries, that Nigeria Government could not boast of being capable of handling a simple case of ruptured appendix. He was in a state of dilenma, to save his wife or to safe his face. Of course he counted himself as no 1 and his wife no. 2 before the shame of his administration not establishing centres of excellence in Nigeria.Who wouldn't do the same? We must thank the Almighty God for saving the First Lady's life. How much would it cost to establish a centre of excellency in each of the six Geopolitical zones?
Now, to the team of doctors that attended to her in Nigeria, is it that they are not experienced as to make the right diagnosis, they did not have the right equipments to work with or it was an excuse to travel abroad and earn their Estacode? They have questions to answer.

Mr President, if this has happened to your dear wife, could you imagine what the ordinary Nigerians are going through. Please this is a wake-up call do something and retrieve your image.
