The Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) has said that the Federal Government pronouncements, especially as they affect job creation, are not always matched with action.

The assertion was made at the weekend by the organisation during its 34th Annual General Meeting and luncheon held in Lagos, where NBCC explained that though government may have good intentions with its pronouncements, it has failed to match it with actions as it affects the citizenry.

According to its President and Chairman of Council, Mr. Chukwuemeka Awagu, “While it is true the government has genuine intention towards job creation, it is however, doubtful whether pronouncements are matched with action”.
He explained that in the 2011 budget, federal government provided N50 billion to kick-start the National Job Creation Scheme with the engagement of the private sector contractors to implement.

Awagu noted that the contractors will implement projects like labour intensive public works such as renovation and maintenance of schools, hospitals, primary healthcare centres, road rehabilitation, urban sanitisation and solid waste management and disposal amongst others.

He further said that if all the above-mentioned policies could be well implemented, these would help boost job opportunities and then reduce unemployment rate.
“However, the facts on the ground point to the contrary to holistically address the unemployment issue and achieve the real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth,” he said.

Continuing, Awagu pointed out that government has to identify the real farmer and then subsidise his inputs and guarantee market for his produce. “Government should remove impediments to investments in infrastructure, create a good enabling environment in order to resuscitate and promote the growth of micro small and medium enterprises,” Awagu said.
