President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday approved the conferment of special Golden Jubilee Independence Anniversary Awards on 50 distinguished Nigerians and friends of Nigeria for their various roles and contributions to the development of the country.
According to the statement conveying the list of the awardees by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Mahmud Ahmed Yayale, the Sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Samuel Heelas Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alhaji (Sir) Ahmadu Bello, and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa among others are to be honoured posthumously, for their great contribution to the development of Nigeria.
Former Presidents Shehu Shagari, Olusegun Obasanjo and the Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, as well as Professor Chinua Achebe are among the distinguished awardees.
The statement said the awards would be conferred on them or representatives of their families in the case of those who are deceased, by the President at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 7.00 p.m.
SGF who is the Chairman, Steering Committee Nigeria at 50 said, “Accommodation has been reserved at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. Those on the list should on arrival contact the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for further information”.
Others to be honoured according to the statement are: Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Mallam Aminu Kano, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Ernest Ikoli, Jaja Anucha Wachuku, Dennis Chukude Osadebay, Major General J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi and General Yabuku Gowon.
Also to be honoured are: General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Professor Kenneth O. Dike, Professor Jacob Festus Ade Ajayi, Professor Ishaya Audu , Professor Iya Abubakar, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, Joseph Sarwuan Tarka, Shettima Ali Monguno among others.
