The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Professor Michael Ibadin, yesterday warned that except Nigerians reduced their consumption of adulterated food, diagnosed cases of cancer will continue to be on the increase.

Ibadin who raised the alarm when he played host to journalists in Benin City, however stressed the urgent need for all to go back to consumption of natural food so as to minimise the proliferation of the dreaded disease. According to him, “Even this cancer thing we have also discovered that it is common among Deltans than Edo people because of the gas fume that they have. Until we move away, go back to our natural food, then incidences of cancer will even increase farther than this.’’

“So you find out either it has to do with the food we eat. We eat so much of refined food now. Those days, there were no maggi cube, I even hear that you can use maggi cube to wash clothes. Today do you know they use carbide to ripen plantain and oranges?. You rub it on plantain this night, tomorrow morning is ripe. Then they have one red colouring agent that they use in adulterating palm oil. They buy grade C palm oil which is for industrial use, convert it to grade A and add the colour. People are making money from it but they are killing others.’’

The CMD equally noted that cases of sudden loss of weight amongst young women could also be traced to cancer, adding that during pregnancy, hormones which encourage the growth of cancer often poured out.

“I think cancer has always been there but the rate at which it is diagnosed now is far higher than in the past and that does not mean we are not witnessing an increase surge in the number of cancer but I think there is something wrong. Cancer gets to a stage you cannot even touch it otherwise the patient would not come out of that theatre but we see more of cancer these days and the varieties of cancer we see too have also increased,” he added.
