To launch youth academy in Nigeria
Spanish football giant, Espanyol has confirmed its participation in the Lagos International Football Tournament slated for between July 25 and 28 at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, even as it is set to launch its youth team in Nigeria.
Head, Media & Communications of the Lagos International Football Tournament (LIFT), Yemi Akinbode, said in a statement Thursday that Espanyol will be coming to Nigeria with a star-studded team of 35 people including players, coaching & technical crew and their medical personnel.
The CEO/President of the club, Joan Collet, confirmed the trip in a statement issued Thursday.
“I’d like to confirm to Lagos International Football Tournament, represented by Mr. Mutiu Adepoju, the firm intention of RCD Espanyol de Barcelona to participate in the maiden edition of the mentioned football tournament to be played in July 2013 in Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, in Lagos.”
The President also thanked the former Super Eagles player for the great role he has played in the growth and development of the game of soccer not only in Africa but in the world at large.
“RCD Espanyol Barcelona confirmed the authenticity of this letter and is pleased to count with the inestimable experience and knowledge of Mr. Mutiu Adepoju and assure his interest in participating in the tournament,” he posited.
The team has also confirmed that it will use the opportunity of its participation in the tournament, which comes as a pre-season in Europe, to inaugurate its youth team in the commercial and football-loving city of Lagos.
“This is first of its kind in Nigeria and we are excited about the prospects. The organizers of the tournament have integrated a Youth Football Clinic which will take place a day to the commencement of the tournament. The clinic will afford other youth academies in Nigeria the opportunity to mingle, train and interact with their soccer stars and icons,” he stated.
Apart from Espanyol, other participating teams in the tournament include; Ismaily SC of Egypt, Asante Kotoko of Ghana and Nigeria’s Kano Pillars.
LIFT is an initiative of Mutiu Adepoju, designed as an annual fiesta to promote and enhance the quality of the game of soccer both in terms of strategic management, organisation and tactical implementation of policies and programmes in Nigeria and globally.
