A stakeholder in the Telecommunications industry and Chief Executive Officer on of Telecoms Answer, Mr. Titi Omo-Ettu, has called for the revocation of the licences of erring operators who have failed to address the issues of service quality faced by its subscribers.
Omo-Ettu stated this at the 9th anniversary of the telecoms consumer parliament organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
He advised the commission to measure the performance level of the telecoms operators and apply sanctions where necessary.
“If somebody is not doing well, why not revoke the licence of the operator," he said.
However, the President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), Mr. Deolu Ogunbanjo, said no licence should be revoked, suggesting that defaulters should be called to order.
According to him, “if you revoke the licence of an operator, and the next person comes in, then what next? You might be faced with the same problems they had and may be worse.”
Ogunbanjo advised that the rule of law must be respected, even as the operators are expected to improve on their operations.
On his part, the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Mr. Eugene Juwah explained that the purpose of the consumer’s forum was an avenue to discuss critical issues relating to quality of service.
He said, “The Commission had held 69 editions of the telecom consumer parliament, 52 editions of the consumer outreach programme and four consumer town hall meetings to discuss vital issues.
“This is also to empower consumers with the information that would enable them take informed decisions concerning their preferences for the services and products being offered by service providers,’’ he said.
