Tom Cleverley blasts home United's second goal

Robin van Persie's 12th Premier League goal of the season helped Manchester United overcome Sunderland and restore their six-point lead at the top, while Aston Villa stunned Liverpool at Anfield.

Van Persie broke the deadlock with a left-foot finish from eight yards after being set up by Ashley Young.

Michael Carrick found Tom Cleverley who produced a sublime finish into the far corner before Wayne Rooney hit the bar, reports the BBC.

Rooney did find the net from close range after Van Persie's cross before Fraizer Campbell headed a consolation.

And at Anfield,  Liverpool were left stunned after their hopes of challenging for a top four spot were hit by a loss to Aston Villa.

The home side went behind against the run of play when Christian Benteke arrowed a shot in off the post.

Benteke lovely backheel set up Andreas Weimann for Villa's second before the Reds were denied a penalty when Ciaran Clark pulled Daniel Agger's shirt.

Benteke made it three from close range for a resurgent Villa before Steven Gerrard netted a late consolation goal.

In the lunch time kick off, Manchester City bounced back from the disappointment of losing the Manchester derby with a stylish victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park.

Sergio Aguero opened the scoring with a close-range finish after being set up by Samir Nasri, who hit the post 10 minutes later.

Roberto Mancini on Manchester City's 'very difficult' win against Newcastle

Javi Garcia made it 2-0 from David Silva's corner before Demba Ba's header after the break gave the Magpies hope.

But Yaya Toure's seven-yard finish from Pablo Zabaleta's pass sealed victory.

It was the perfect response from Roberto Mancini's side after the bitter disappointment of losing 3-2 at home to neighbours Manchester United last Sunday.

In other games, Norwich came from behind to beat Wigan 2-1, Stoke drew 1-1 with Everton and QPR won its very first game of the campaign when they beat Fulham 2-0.

Newcastle 1 - 3 Man City
Liverpool 1 - 3 Aston Villa
Man Utd 3 - 1 Sunderland
Norwich 2 - 1 Wigan
QPR 2 - 1 Fulham
Stoke 1 - 1 Everton
