Fellaini heads home to give Everton a 1-0 lead
BBC
Marouane Fellaini capped a superb solo display with Everton's winner to ensure Robin van Persie's Manchester United debut ended in a shock defeat.
Fellaini, who tormented United in the air all night, fired against the outside of the post in the first half.
Leon Osman also hit the bar for the Toffees before Fellaini rose to head home Darron Gibson's corner, reports the BBC.
Van Persie came off the bench with 22 minutes left but United could not turn their late pressure into an equaliser.
Sir Alex Ferguson included new £12m signing Shinji Kagawa as well as Wayne Rooney, Nani and Danny Welbeck in his starting line-up but, even with the introduction of the £24m Dutchman, his side struggled to carve out meaningful chances.
United keeper David de Gea was by far the busier keeper, making superb saves to deny Steven Pienaar and Osman before half-time.
