Gareth Barry scored a 92nd-minute winner as Manchester City stunned Reading to close the gap on leaders Manchester United to three points.
Champions City were on course for a home draw against the bottom-placed club, but Barry headed in David Silva's cross to seal a potentially vital win.
Barry and Carlos Tevez went close in a one-sided first half, while substitute Edin Dzeko had chances in the second, reports the BBC.
Reading felt they deserved a penalty for a challenge on Jay Tabb at 0-0.
Meanwhile, at St. James Park, Shola Ameobi scored his third goal of the season as Newcastle handed Harry Redknapp his first defeat as Queens Park Rangers manager.
It looked like being a frustrating day for Newcastle, who had lost six of their previous seven games, as Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse missed good chances.
But substitute Ameobi rifled in a left-footed shot with nine minutes left for his first league goal in nine months.
QPR battled hard, with striker Djibril Cisse missing their best chance.
In other games, Sunderland got an away at Southampton, Tottenham played goaless with Stoke, West Brom beat Norwich 2-1 and Everton came from a goal down to beat West Ham.
