Second Republic Vice- President Dr. Alex Ekwueme, has tasked the federal government to ensure that the country will not record any air disaster all through the new years.
He said this can be achieved if the Aviation ministry adopts best practices in driving the reforms in the sector.
He spoke at Ihiala, Ihiala council area of Anambra State during the new year day Ihiala Day Celebration and Award for Excellence in community service cum launch of N750 million Ihiala Civic centre project.
The first Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who took a swipe at the worsening security situation in the country asked the Nigerian politicians to do some introspection by examining themselves with a view to discovering what has gone wrong with the Nigerian system and find a way of ameliorating what he called the worsening situation of things.
The Octogenerian, who was bestowed with an award of excellence for community service by Ihiala Progress Union (IPU) along with other distinguished persons of the community, seven of them post-humously, said the self-re-examination has become necessary given many malaises that had befallen the country in recent times such as security challenges posed by the spate of kidnappings and extremist religious violence in some parts of the country.
Earlier, President General of IPU, Dr. Vin Ezeaka, said the first edition of the town’s celebration took place in 2010 with the theme of uniting the community for aggressive development, adding that the 2012 celebration with the theme “Be your Brother’s Keeper” is apt in the development of the community.
He bemoaned the prevailing disunity in the community occasioned by what he called the desperation of “nouveau rich to be seen or called the leaders of the community, adding that the situation where the leading lights of the community cannot come together and plan its development remained worrisome.
“We forget that leadership is earned. We forget that leadership is not just about money or riches. We forget that leadership is service oriented relationship between you and the people,” he said.
The occasion was also graced by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, the state Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Oseloka Obaze; former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Chuma Nzeribe; and the serving member for Ihiala Federal Constituency, Hon. Fort Dike, among others.
