Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Patrick Ekeji, has expressed deep regret over the error of referring to ex-Olympian, Nojim Maiyegun as late in his remarks during the closing ceremony of the 18th National Sports Commission in Lagos on December 9.

Chief Ekeji who conceptualised and initiated the trophies named after the eminent Nigerians including Maiyegun, said the error was brought to his notice in a story in a national newspaper.

He emphasised that he has very high regards for Maiyegun who was the first Nigerian to win an Olympic medal and regretted the error of referring to Maiyegun as late.

Ekeji tendered his unreserved apology to Mr. Maiyegun’s family and the Nigerian sports community adding that he will continue to accord him the respect he deserves as a truly great Nigerian.
