Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday continued to lay siege at the private wing of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Limited, Dr. Wale Babalakin, is on admission.

No fewer than 10 policemen have also been stationed permanently at the entrance to Babalakin’s ward and the immediate surrounding, thereby, holding him captive in his room.

The anti-graft commission had said its operatives were not harassing the businessman, but only at the hospital to ascertain that he was truly on admission.
But source close to Babalakin said the presence of the operative was causing him a lot of physical and emotional trauma and complicating his already precarious health condition.

The source who spoke to THISDAY said: “Yesterday marked the third day the EFCC had been keeping Babalakin under arrest in the hospital

“This a clear violation of his rights as a citizen of the country. The agency’s action is also in defiance of the order of a Federal High Court, which restrained it from going ahead with his arraignment and trial.”

The agency had, on Tuesday, besieged LUTH, where the businessman has been on admission since last week Wednesday, with over 20 operatives, including armed policemen, to arrest him, despite his health.

They EFCC operatives were, however, prevented from carrying out their mission by the management of the hospital, which denied them access to the ward where Babalakin was admitted.
