Gen Charles Airhiavbere (rtd),
Stakeholders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State have called on the party’s hierarchy to expel its governorship candidate in the July 14, 2012 election in the state, Major-Gen Charles Airhiavbere (rtd), from the party for bringing the PDP into disrepute.
The call was the fall-out of the recent failure of Airhiavbere to have the election that gave the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, a second term, nullified as the Supreme Court on Friday upheld Oshiomhole’s appeal against the decision of the Governorship Election Tribunal .
The stakeholders , at a press conference held in Benin City, saturday, said Airhiavbere’s decision to contest the result of the governorship election in the state at the tribunal, against the decision of the party hierarchy has damaged the reputation of the party.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Chief Aisulimhen Ighodaro said “the ill-advised decision of our candidate in the July 14 election, Maj-Gen Charles Airhiavbere, to go to court against the party’s advise has done untold damage to our reputation as a party.
“His unilateral decision which was at variance with that of the party at the national and the state levels is not only curious, but also shows that Airhiavbere is not a party man, he holds the PDP in contempt and is on a personal voyage to fulfill his inordinate ambition.
“The decision by the his running mate, Johnson Abolagba, is not only commendable, but shows that he is a proper, well-tutored and real politician who regards the party as supreme.
“Airhiavbere’s ambition, which has now been truncated by the decision of the Supreme Court has further damaged the fabrics of our party, the PDP, which had earlier been badly tainted by his shameful loss to the opposition candidate at the July 14 poll.”
“It is our opinion that Charles Airhiavbere be immediately expelled from our great party, the PDP, to serve as a deterrence to others and show to the world that ours is a disciplined party. If a party man decides to jettison the decision of the party on the issue of legal dispute of the last election, it goes to confirm that the candidate’s ambition over-rides that of the party,” Ighodaro said.
