Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party [PDP], Edo State chapter, Chief Dan Orbih, has promised that the party, if voted into power in the July 14 governorship election, would reduce the tax burden imposed by the present administration in the State by 80 per cent.
He also said the party would reduce tuition fees at the state-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma to N18,000.
Orbih, who spoke while addressing hundreds of party supporters including members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), who defected to the PDP at the Garricck Memorial Grammar School Ground in Benin City, alleged that the ACN- government has put a tax burden on the people of Edo, to the extent that ordinary hair dressers and other artisans can no longer operate profitably in the state.
According to him, “We have consulted with tax experts, after which the party has become convinced that the tax burden imposed on the people of Edo is unacceptable.
“If elected into office come July 14, one of the first step that will be taken by the PDP government is to cut tax 80 per cent and to reduce school fees at the Ambrose Ali University to N18, 000.” Besides, Chief the Edo PDP chairman declared that only the people of Benin can decide who they will vote for in the 14 July governorship election in the state, Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), adding that individuals who speak for themselves do not and cannot represent the collective aspirations of the Binis.
Chief Orbih who spoke against the backdrop of reports quoted the Esogban of Benin, Chief David Edebiri as saying that the Benin monarch, Omo N’Oba Erediauwa had endorsed the incumbent governor of the state, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, for a second tenure in office.
He said: “The next election is an election between our candidate, your son and another person. Are you going to leave your son to vote for another person? Nobody can talk for Benin people; the Benin people will talk for themselves. The people of Benin will decide for themselves. What we have with the people of a covenant of good governance”.
In his speech, the PDP governorship candidate, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere promised that the PDP administration which he will run if elected would establish a University of Technology and give immediate employment to 20, 000 Edo people.
