Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Delta Central chapter, Delta State, yesterday passed a vote of confidence on Senator Pius Ewherido, who is representing the Delta Central Senatorial district.
A faction of the DPP led by the state Secretary of the party, Lance Orhiero, had on Tuesday passed a vote of no confidence on the senator over his alleged failure to attend meetings of the state executive committee of the party and also not empowering the party faithful.
But moving the motion of a vote of confidence at an emergency meeting of the party in the district yesterday, leader of the party, Mr. Cyril Ogodo, noted that there had never been any time when any other senator bought over 50 vehicles for his followers in the district.
In his remarks, Chairman of the party in the district, Chief Henry Olori, said the motion for vote of no confidence passed on the senator was null and void, pointing out that the meeting was convened with utmost disregards to the provisions of the DPP constitution.
Olori maintained that the senator had initiated empowerment programmes and scholarship schemes worth over N25million for over 250 students in tertiary institutions, adding that there was the need for the state executive of the party to “look into the activities of these people who are trying to drag the name of the party in disrepute.
"Please don’t send wrong signals to the people. We know that these people are doing these things for selfish reasons.”
Commenting on the allegation that Ewherido had not been attending the party’s meeting, the party chairman explained that invitations to such meetings had never been extended to the senator.
“There is no crack in DPP; rather there are certain people who are doing certain things for their selfish interest,” he said.
The party also passed a vote of no confidence on the state Secretary of the party, Orhiero, over alleged misrepresentation of facts, disrespect for party rules and guidelines as regards management of a political party and convening unauthorised meetings of the party without due regards to the executive of the party in the district.
