Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu

Former biafran leader and leader of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu is dead.

Thisday can confirm that he died late last night. He had been sick for a while and was receiving treatment at a united Kingdom (UK) hospital.More to follow . . .

Ojukwu was born in Zungeru, Northern Nigeria in 1933. His father, Sir Louis Phillipe Odumegwu Ojukwu was a wealthy businessman who made money from the transport industry. Ojukwu was sent to the UK at the age of 13 to study, first at Epsom College and later at Lincoln College, Oxford University where he earned a Masters degree in History.

Upon his return in 1956, he joined the civil service in then Eastern Nigeria. He would later leave the service to join the military, where he was one of the few university graduates.

Ojukwu was appointed Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria by Military Head of State, General Aguiyi Ironsi on January 17, 1966. By May of the same year, Nigeria was facing a serious crisis. A planned pogrom in Northern Nigeria targeting and killing South-easterners presented a problem. He made several assurances to the South-easterners about their safety but the crisis continued.  In May 1967, he declared Eastern Nigeria a Sovereign State named Biafra.

In July, 1967, then Head of State Yakubu Gowon declared war on Biafra. A civil war ensued. The war raged on for another 30 months. An attempt at peace during a meeting at Aburi, Ghana did not stop the war. In 1970, Ojukwu handed over power to his deputy Major-General Phillip Effiong and left the country to avoid assassination. He was granted political asylum in Cote D'Ivoire by President Felix Houphöet-Biogny.

The civilian President of Shehu Shagari granted him an official pardon and he returned in 1982 after 13 years in exile. Ojukwu would later go into politics, forming the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). He was an active member until his death.

  • He lived and died for the people. He could have easily decided like most affluent Nigerians born with silver spoon in their mouth to identify with the rich, mighty and glamorous. No, the Moses our time decided to identify with the oppressed, weak and poor. That is the secret of the love of the common people for him.Of Igbo parents, born in the North, educated in the West, he was a complete Nigerian more than those who want One Nigeria only on their own terms. Finally, to borrow the words in Shakespeare's Julius Ceaser, "the elements were so mixed in him that the whole world could stand up and say, HERE WAS A MAN".

  • I was born immediately after the civil war (1971). As children in the 1970s, the spirit of reconstruction of Nigeria gave us high hopes and high dreams in life. But the Nigerian leaders dashed our hopes and dreams. What was needed to prevent the civil war from happening was less than its eventual human, economic and psychological costs. Today, here in Oxford, I read about this news of your death. Many people saw only your negative, but I and others saw just your positive side. Both Ojukwu and Awolowo had negative sides. But their positive sides were better than what was seen negative about them. If we Nigerians emulated the positive side of these great leaders, we would be better than what we are today.
    At forty, I do very well understand what Ojukwu went through in life home and here.
    Today, right in front of Lincoln College, Oxford, I write. I am sad about the news of your death. You had a vision. You were an inspirational mind to many. I still have to say the one but long word to Emeka, adieu.

Here was a man born rich and famous but who largely sacrificed it all so that his people can have dignity and security in their country of birth. Wish more Nigerian leaders can stand out like him, speak the truth always, and identify with the masses instead of chasing filthy lucre in Abuja and various state capitals. It is a tradition in Nigeria to worship, praise and identify with one, when the going is good, but to desert and forget the same person, when the going becomes rough. • Pa Odumegu Ojukwu I joined many other Nigerians to bare you fare well. You will find rest in the bossom of Your God. Thank you for all you have done to prove to all Nigerians that no sacrifice is too small or too big to give up for freedom of humanity. You did all your best even beyond available opportunity to you to uplift the spirit of an Ndigbo man. You lived and you die for the freedom and you gave up that silver spoon that you were born with so that you can end the injustice on Ndigbo people in their own country they call home. If you had chosen to look the other way and live a comfortable life that you were born with; you will probably be still alive today. Thank you for all you gave Nigeria and thank you for not taking anything away from Nigeria. Go Ahead do not look back the history will be kind to you. Nigeria is not a place that people tend to learn from somebody like you but some us will not forget your sacrifices. As a Nigerian I salute your spirit!

  • Go well ikemba

    Land of the rising sun, we love and cherish,
    Beloved homeland of our brave heroes;
    We must defend our lives or we shall perish,
    We shall protect our hearts from all our foes;
    But if the price is death for all we hold dear,
    Then let us die without a shred of fear.
    Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation,
    Oh fatherland, this be our solemn pledge:
    Defending thee shall be a dedication,
    Spilling our blood we’ll count a privilege;
    The waving standard which emboldens the free
    Shall always be our flag of liberty.
    We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal,
    And through the crucible unscathed we’ll pass;
    When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal,
    We shall remember those who died in mass;
    Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song
    Of victory we scored o’er might and wrong.
    Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall,
    Guide all our movements lest we go astray;
    Give us the strength to heed the humanist call:
    "To give and not to count the cost" each day;
    Bless those who rule to serve with resoluteness,
    To make this clime a land of righteousness

  • Here, was a very beloved former Head of State!
    Oh, Ojukwu!
    Forever you shall be 'the Lion of the tribe of Biafra'.
    Some are saying 'Adieu', but to the Learned, it is welcome to 'Immortality'!
    History will be kind to you, Eze Biafra, Eze Igbo.
    I might not had been worthy to untie your sandals,
    But we Igbos will ever be proud that the same Biafran blood that ran down your Heroic veins
    Still run in ours. And our children's...
    Oh Ojukwu!
    My hero, my brother, my Leader and my King.
    May Jesus find you worthy of His eternal Peace.

  • "...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind...".

    "All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out
    of the book, but translated into a better language..."
    Those were from the works of John Donne, a 17th century English Metaphysical poet.

    Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Ikemba Nnewi, Eze Igbo, will be remembered for several things.
    He stood against suppression and oppression of his people and humanity at large.
    At a time he said that the Biafran issue has gone beyond geographical boundaries but
    has become a thing of the mind - psychology of some sort.

    After about 13 years in exile, he came back to Nigeria and reintegrated, adequately, into the political system.
    He, sometimes, wears the aura of Ariel Sharon. He may have made mistakes as a human being
    but ,in all, he will be remembered as a charismatic and great leader with astonishing oratory and a
    powerful communication skill.

    Ikemba, you have not died; you have just been translated into a better language. Adieu, the leader of the half of the rising sun.

  • in as much as I join the Igbos to mourn the death of Ikemba Ojukwu, I completely berate This Day's deceitful write-up. A media of your calibre should not engage in lies and misinformation. Tell it as it is, do not apportion blame on the poor northerners who had their leaders assassinated which was the cause of the unrest.
    Majority of the IGbos did not know what their leaders were up to, had they known they would have stopped it. Cammon let us move on, whoever the writer is, there is little or nothing to gain from this callous and provocative piece of evil write-up. We shall overcome our minor problems and come to love one another for the progress of Nigeria, of course without a media like yours.

  • As we journey into the future

    We the Ebo people presently called Igbo have in the past 400 years lack a coherent vision .
    Some attempt were made by notable Igbo men in diaspora like ;
    1 Africanus Horton 1835-1883
    2 Olaudah Equiano 1745-1797
    3Edward James Roye 1815-1872 (5th President of Liberia)
    4Edward Wilmot blyden 1832-1912
    5 Willam Napolean Barleycorn 1884-1925
    King Jaja of Opobo 1821-1891
    Even the formation of the 1st Igbo Union in Gambia in 1842 by notable Igbo returnee slaves was aimed at giving the Igbos a coherent voices [1]
    Of all the people mentioned above none and I mean none was able to arouse the consciousness of this Great tribe (Igbo) of my like Chief Udumagu Ojukwue 1933-2011 did.
    At the ending of the 17th century Olaudah Equiano brought the plight of the Igbo man to humanity in his book.Afrcaus Horton (the surgeon) formed the Igbo union in Liberia 1864. Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu defined the Igbo Consciousness.
    I call him (Chief Odumegwu Ojukwue) the STONE as he will live for ever!
    If slavery could not destroy us(Igbos) but defined us Ojukwu being a student of history aroused our consciousness. I do not see any-thing that can destroy us now as we are stronger than ever!
    May God keep blessing and prospering us(Igbo) as we start our journey into the next unknown.
    We are a working progress.
    Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu you will live for ever!
