Delta Rules Sports Festival Chess Event

After eight days of brilliant chess display, Delta State emerged tops Thursday night at the just concluded chess event of the 18th National Sports Festival held at the Multi Purpose Hall of the University of Lagos.

Delta finished ahead of Oyo State with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals to repeat the feat of the last Sports Festival last year in Rivers State.
Oyo, led by team captain Bunmi Olape, recorded three gold and one bronze while Rivers State came third with two gold and one silver.

On the individual board order, Emmanuel Maduagwna of Delta won gold on board one in the male section with Aniefiok Ekanem from Akwa Ibom and Magnus Ikpiken of Cross River won silver and bronze respectively on the same board.

Last World Chess Olympiad debutant, Yinka Adesina of Ogun State displaced other contenders on board two just as Nonso Attoh of Anambra State and Elijah Donnak from Kebbi won silver and bronze.

Tosin Akinwande of Ondo proved to be the best on board three with Robert Magamya of Adamawa and Lolo Busuyi-Adesina of Osun nest to him in order.

Oyo State picked another gold medal on board four from tactical display from Biola Akinseye and Offodochie Ogbor of Federal Capital Territory won silver and bronze in the section.

In the female category, host Lagos, picked the gold on board one through Yemi Osundiakin while Agiri Amarachi of Bayelsa and Grace Onyeche from Benue won silver and bronze.

Beatrice Okwubor of Akwa Ibom was the best on board two with Brendan Mbuotiden from Ogun and Aramide Sandra also on the medal list.

Nneoma Aguta of Delta won board three and Blessing Abade from Plateau State alongside Moses Maria Ebase win silver and bronze respectively.

Enroute the victory, Delta won the overall female team event with 30.5 points and followed by Lagos with 24.4 points and Edo state won bronze with 22.5 points.

Oyo edged out Delta with score of 28.5 points as against 28 secured by Delta while Edo State picked bronze with 24 points.
