Vanessa Obioha submits that Kim Kardashian’s appearance like dew did not subtract from the stunning performance at Darey’s ‘Love Like a Movie’ concert.

Darey redefined showbiz with his beautiful and glamorous concert last weekend. He gave the Valentine season a masterstroke with his variety of performances that left his audience dumbstruck and breathless. The R&B singer ended the Valentine season in a very spectacular way like never-been-seen-before in the showbiz industry with his exquisite Valentine show, ‘Love Like a Movie.’

The much anticipated show wrapped up the Valentine season activities in grand style, leaving guests in awe as the R&B singer notched-up the standard of events packaging with panache and glitz. The theatrical concert lived up to its expectations and recorded the highest number of guest appearances.

Despite Kim Kardashian’s less-than-a-minute appearance on stage to the disappointment of her fans, the guests were given a euphoric night. The Soul Muzik artiste ignited the love candle with wicked, passionate love songs that made the heart flutter and the body quiver.

Held at the Convention Centre of Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, the show can be best described as an impeccable display of grandeur.  It was also in commemoration of his wife, Deola’s birthday. Deola who is an interior designer is known to have contributed ideas towards the making of what has become a new trend for showbiz organizers. From the beginning to the end, it was a seamless transition of heart-warming and electrifying scenarios.

The stage was built-up on three levels, standing between 25 and 30 feet high on scaffolders. Much of the action happened on the centre-stage. A lot of activities also went down back-stage. For instance, the control centre which synchronised lighting and other effects; and the performance of the trapeze artistes was situated back-stage. Everything about the stage spoke volumes about dexterity. From the projector screens, the trapeze, fireworks, lighting and other effects, to the sound system, one could detect the adroitness of masters at work.

The ambience of the show was magical and love filled. It set the mood for lovers to fall in love all over again. It was like stepping into a magical world of fairies. What a justification for the theme-‘Love Like a Movie’! Darey’s performance was a show stopper. It was the perfect atmosphere to find love. The show took guests on an emotional rollercoaster, narrating a tale of love at different stages.

Darey anchored most of the show alone as he performed hit tracks from his album as well as other great classical love tunes from artistes such as Boys II Men which he performed with Tolu ( MTN project fame) Praiz, Timi Dakolo and Banky W.  He also performed the sensational Joe hit track back in the day “I Wanna Know”, and the popular “Lady in Red” by Chris De Burgh.

Displaying a slew of his talents throughout the night, Darey slid effortlessly from a singer to a poet accompanied by dance-drama on stage. Audience members were all the more captivated by an awesome animation of a fairy king who portrayed his lyrics with paintings on the screen. Stretching the imagination with a touch of élan, he even had mermaids on stage. The ambience of the show was simply exceptional. There were also trapeze artistes who performed outstanding stunts on and off the main stage. The costume worn by the dancers who were a blend of South African dancers, Italians and Nigerians as well was flamboyant.

The thing about this show is that Darey didn’t just pool a crowd to watch him sing or entertain them, rather he portrayed the real meaning of love from themes such as friendship, kindness and peace among others. He waxed lyrical with his presentations, giving the show a theatrical atmosphere.

A thunderous cheer indicated an increasing admiration for Darey when he switched to baritone to deliver the popular ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong. Many lovebirds in the audience must have swooned over each other when he sang “Endless love” with Waje. The feelings he evoked in couples as there was much cuddling and smooching going on. His hit track “Not The Girl” was another performance of the night that warmed the heart of the guests.

Guests included Mr Nicolaas Vervelde, Managing Director/Chief Executive, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Walter Drenth, Marketing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Larry Annetts CMO, MTN Nigeria, Elohor Aisien, Onari Duke, Mo Abudu, Nkiru Anumudu, Tony Agenmonmen, as well as Ramsey Nouah, Segun Arinze, Emeka Ike, Chidi Mokeme, and Charles Novia. Other guests include Dr Sid, Linda Ikeji, Toolz, Gbemi Olateru Olagbegi, Annie Macaulay, Toke Makinwa, Yvonne Vixen Ekwere, Omowunmi Akinifesi among others but it was US star Kim Kardashian, who flew in to co-host the platinum red carpet with Darey, attend the special LLAM dinner and open the show that stole everyone’s attention, even if her presence was like a dew that vanished in a twinkle of an eye. But did give the audience something to cheer about in the brief spell of her presence, she greeted the audience in Yoruba ‘E kaale Nigeria’, she said, as the packed hall erupted in joy.

With the ‘Love Like a Movie’ concert, Darey has proved to the world that he is not just a musician but a grilled and well seasoned artiste with different delicacies to warm the heart. The former Cool FM OAP and member of the Acapella group ‘Chordwebs’ is known for his penchant for music right from childhood.   His father, Art Alade was a renowned jazz artiste in his time and Darey honed his skills by accompanying him to concerts. But what really brought Darey into the limelight was the 2004 edition of Project Fame Academy where he emerged in the third position. Darey has become one of the A-list artistes in the Nigerian entertainment industry. He is a producer, a singer-songwriter, a voice over artiste, an entertainment consultant and has won numerous awards. He is known to feature in high profile events as well and has performed with other international artistes such as Beyonce, R. Kelly, Jay Z, John Legend, and has been privileged to be with world leaders such as Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, and George W. Bush among others. He has built an enviable career for himself in entertainment.  Other performers who shared the stage with him were Tolu of MTN Project Fame, Mo’eazy, Waje, Iceprince, Zaina, Banky W and  2face among others.

As curtains closed on the concert, many guests must have reechoed Nelly Furtado’s sentiment in one of her hit tracks… “why do all good things come to an end?” His last song a song about world peace and love was no less dramatic as he was accompanied on stage by children holding big white globe-like balloons that was passed among them.

With ‘Love Like a Movie’ Darey etched his name in gold. The show definitely received great éclat from the guests who were still reveling in the awesome and impressive exhibitions of myriads of performances as they left the venue.  It was a night to remember and cherish forever.
