Daewoo Nigeria Limited has said it would partner the federal and state governments in the Niger Delta region to rehabilitate  victims of the flood disaster that ravaged most communities in the region.

The company said it was disturbed by the sufferings of the people of the area and announced that it would liaise with its home government to bring succour to the victims even when the flood recedes.

The Executive Director, Community and Government Affairs of the company, Chief Clement Abrakasa Debo, made the commitment when he, on behalf of the company, presented truck loads of relief materials worth millions of naira to the victims in Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States.

He noted that the task of taking care of the victims was enormous and expressed satisfaction with the work being done by the various government agencies in that regard.

“On behalf of the Managing Director, Sang Real Kim, and the entire management and staff of Daewoo, we make this token donation. We feel the pain of the displaced people. So we brought this as a token to you and to the state in general; that this will be used for the relief of the people that are affected by the flood,” he said at the Omoku Camp in Rivers State.

He noted that the company had enjoyed a peaceful operational environment in the Niger Delta and said the company wished to show its appreciation to the people by identifying with them in this period of hardship.

“We know that the rehabilitation of the flood victims will be an enormous task. Daewoo as a company, will partner the government when the floods recede. We have made arrangements to get custom-made tents and of course when we get to that period, we will definitely show that we are a company that is based here in the Niger Delta.

“Because of the peaceful operating environment we have enjoyed here, we want to identify with and make sure that these people are truly rehabilitated. Daewoo will be at the forefront to partner government to make sure that these people are adequately rehabilitated,” Debo said.

Receiving the materials at the Omoku Camp in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) on behalf of the Rivers State Government, Chairman of the Council, Mr. Raymond Nwokocha, commended the company for the gesture and enjoined other companies, especially those in the area, to emulate Daewoo.

He noted that the state had received relief materials from several corporate bodies, but said the gesture from Daewoo was special both in quantity and quality.

Also, receiving the materials at the State secretariat, Yenagoa, Secretary to Bayelsa State Government, Prof. Allison Oguru, expressed appreciation to the company, noting that the state was in dire need of mattresses to go round the number of people affected by the flood.

At Asaba, the Delta State capital, the state Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Anthonia Ashiedu, who received the materials at the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) Camp, which houses a large number of displaced persons, said she was overwhelmed by the gesture.

She commended the company for the quality materials donated, stating that it showed that Daewoo was not only concerned about the welfare of the flood victims but also their comfort.

Items donated included mattresses, bags of rice, cartons of bottled water, milk, sugar, tea, detergents, disinfectants and toiletries.
